One Skein vs. One Cake Crochet Shawl Patterns

A one-skein shawl uses a single skein of fingering weight yarn, usually around 100g. These shawls may be triangular or crescent shapes with open lacy stitches. This lets you grow a beautiful, wide wingspan with minimal yarn.

A fingering weight yarn cake holds more yardage – usually 200g. You can make a larger shawl with a cake than with a standard skein. Gradient cakes are especially lovely. The color changes gently as you work, and it makes you want to do just one more row to see what comes next!

We’ve included patterns using both skeins and cakes in this collection. To help you find the perfect pattern for your yarn, we’ve divided them into two sections: one-skein shawls and one-cake shawls.

Tendril Shawl Revisited

purrple and orange crochet shawl hanging on a white wall

This small crescent-shaped shawl remains a fan favorite! It alternates sections of open V-stitches with rows of more solid shells, creating gentle stripes that add graceful movement to the design. The PDF pattern also includes a crochet chart. This pattern was revisited in 2026, but you can also find the original tendril shawl pattern here.

Heliodor Shawl

This lacy crochet shawl combines V-stitches and 3-dc clusters for a beautifully simple, almost meditative stitch pattern. Technically, this one uses about 10 g of a contrasting yarn for the edging. But you could make it in a single color for a truly one skein shawl. Just put aside a ball of 10g for the border before you begin working on the shawl.

Gloaming Shawl

easy asymmetrical crochet shawl

This lightweight asymmetrical shawl is perfect for everyday wear—small enough to wear as a crochet scarf or throw over your shoulders to dress up any outfit. The beginner-friendly pattern uses mostly double crochets and chains in a 4-row repeat to create a delicate, airy mesh with a beautiful drape.

Green Olive Shawl

This gorgeous triangle crochet shawl is made with an open, breathable stitch pattern that’s perfect for wearing over a sundress or tank top on a cool summer evening. Your hook will fly through this project once you get the hang of the simple stitch pattern! Add tassels for an extra special touch.

Red Clover Shawl

one skein crochet shawl

Add a bright pop of color to your ensemble with this pretty crochet shawl. The pattern uses basic crochet stitches, combined to create an interesting pattern for a quick and relaxing make. Increasing every row on one side only makes a gently curved, asymmetrical shape that’s great for wrapping around your neck as a light crochet scarf.

Winter Ice Shawl

This elegant crochet triangular shawl features an easy lace shell stitch pattern. The shawl is worked from the bottom up, using a larger hook than recommended for this yarn, which creates an open, lacy fabric that you’ll love to wear.

Vintage Peach Shawl

one skein crochet shawl pattern

Probably my most popular shawl design! Treble crochet stitches (UK double treble) work up quickly in a one-row repeat to create this shallow triangle crochet shawl. A delicate border of chains and picots give this shawl a lovely finish. This easy crochet shawl pattern also includes a video tutorial.

Hot Chili

crochet summer shawl pattern

With its gorgeous stitch pattern of shells and V-stitches, this stunning crochet shawl is the perfect addition to your summer wardrobe! The pattern is worked from the smallest point, increasing on one side only, with decreases every 8 rows that create a staggered edge.

Little Fictions Shawl

This light and lacy crochet shawl uses a relaxing two-row pattern repeat, made up of simple stitches. This versatile triangle shawl works equally well loosely draped as a summer wrap or doubled around your neck for a winter scarf.

Copper Beech Shawl

This narrow asymmetric shawl uses a simple four-row repeat that lets the beautiful hand-dyed colors shine through! A picot edging adds just the right amount of delicate detail without overwhelming the design. The free pattern includes a crochet diagram.

Flora Shawl

This eye-catching crochet shawl features an open mesh stitch pattern, an asymmetrical shape, and a wide wingspan. As with all of these designs, blocking is critically important—especially to shape the dramatic points along the border.

Aideen Wrap

This rectangular crochet shawl features a striking diamond design in filet crochet. While it looks intricate, this pattern uses mainly double crochet stitches. The free pattern includes written instructions, but if you prefer to have a visual, the PDF version offers a detailed filet crochet chart as well.

Inishfree Shawl

a crochet lace rectangle shawl on a beach

This elegant crochet rectangle shawl showcases a single gradient yarn cake in a soothing open wave stitch pattern. The shawl begins with a long starting chain, but don’t let that scare you away! Just place a stitch marker every 50 chains (or at whatever interval works for you).

Ruby Glimmer Shawl

orange and purple crochet shawl around a womans neck

This boho-inspried crochet shawl is worked in a simple two-row repeat and accented by a flowly fringe. The lightweight shawl folds up small to fit in your bag, so you can pull it out whenever you need a beach coverup or a little light warmth.

Summer Fuchsia Shawl

crochet shawl in gradient yarn pink and purple

This triangle shawl uses a simple, pretty shell stitch repeat that provides warmth and coverage while still draping nicely. The crochet shawl pattern is suitable for an advanced beginner, or would be a quiet, enjoyable make for more experienced crocheters.

Loganberry Shawl

The design of this beautiful, flowing crochet wrap centers around another delicate version of the wave stitch. You can easily customize the size of this rectangular shawl using the stitch multiple provided in the pattern details. Optional fringe brings a relaxed, carefree feel to the piece.

Apricot Rose Shawl

Apricot Rose Shawl

This semi-circle crochet shawl offers another shape with lots of styling options—it looks especially fabulous with shawl pin worn to the side. The shawl blends double crochet and puff stitches for a beautifully textured look. The free pattern offers written instructions, a detailed photo tutorial, and stitch counts for each “wedge” of the half circle.

Fragrant Shawl

free crochet triangle shawl with shell pattern

This airy triangle shawl is perfectly wearable in any season – as a colorful accent to winter outfits or a lightweight crochet layer for summer nights. This approachable pattern uses a simple, satisfying shell stitch pattern that’s ideal for everyone, from adventurous beginners to advanced crocheters.

Seamróg Shawl

This romantic triangle shawl pairs open stitches with puff shells for a one-of-a-kind textured lace fabric. The shawl starts at the top and expands down, so if you prefer a different size, you can simply stop at any size you like. Drape this one over your shoulders for a special night out.

I hope you have enjoyed these one skein crochet shawl patterns and have found the perfect project for that special skein of fingering weight yarn!

  1. I would love to make many of these shawls but cannot find fingering yarn especially the variegated ones unless they contains wool. I’m allergic to wool. any ideas?

    1. That is a good question! The cake yarns (eg. Scheepjes Whirl) are nearly always a cotton/acrylic mix which would be suitable. If you do a search for fingering weight yarns (or 4 ply) you may find some suitable fibers. But I understand what you mean about the hand dyed yarns that are variagated. They nearly always contain wool.
