Crochet Summer Shawl Pattern – Hot Chili

Hot Chili is a beginner-friendly Crochet Summer Shawl Pattern using only basic stitches. Choose one beautiful skein of yarn, start this relaxing easy project and finish in a weekend!

The pattern starts at the smallest point and increases on one side only, while making a decrease every 8 rows and forms an asymmetric triangle.

Once you have blocked your shawl, you will have a stunning crochet summer shawl to wear on a warm evening!

Yarn for a Summer Shawl Crochet Pattern

The sample uses Fingering Weight yarn in the most stunning red and pink colorway. You will need only 400m of any light weight yarn.

The pattern would also work well with DK or Worsted weight yarn. I suggest using a larger than recommended hook size to give your shawl a loose drape and the stitches will open out beautifully after blocking.

The decreases on one side of the shawl form ‘teeth’ which is a striking feature of the design.

Skill Level

Easy
Only basic stitches are used in this shawl but some concentration is required until the row increases are established. Stitches included are dc and tr.

Materials

Schoppel:Zauberball 100 (no.2166) – 100% SW Merino/100g/420m

4.5 mm crochet hook

You can use one skein/ approx. 400 – 450m of any fingering weight yarn

Measurements

Shawl pictured measures 66in [168cm] on the longest length at the top, 50in [127cm] along the bottom and 32in [81cm] on the shortest side after blocking

Gauge

5 shells x 16 rows = 4” [10 cm] in pattern blocked

Gauge is not really important. To achieve a light drape tension, I suggest you make a swatch of the first 5 rows and see what hook size works best for you. I used a larger than recommended hook for my shawl.

Notes (read carefully)

• The shawl starts at one end. Working in rows, increasing each row on one side only and decreasing on one side every 8 rows
• Shawl needs strong blocking to give it its shape
• Ch 2 at beginning of a row does not count as a st
• Ch 5 at beginning of a row counts as 1 tr, ch 1
• The shawl can be made larger or smaller by working more or fewer pattern repeats. This will alter the amount of yarn required.
• Includes written instructions and a crochet chart
• Written in US Crochet Terms

Shell – [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in same sp

V-Stitch (v-st) – [1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc] in same sp

Instructions for Hot Chili Summer Shawl

(see crochet chart below)

Row 1 (set up row): Ch 4, [shell (see special stitches), ch 1, 1 tr] in 4^th ch from hook, turn – 1 tr, 1 shell

Row 2: Ch 5 (counts as 1 tr, ch 1 here and throughout), 1 dc in 1^st ch-1 sp, v-st (see special stitches) in ch-1 sp of next shell, turn – 1 tr, 1 dc, 1 v-st

Row 3: Ch 2 (does not count as a st here and throughout at beg of row), shell in 1st v-st, [shell, ch 1, 1 tr] in final ch-5 sp, turn – 1 tr, 2 shells

Row 4: Ch 5, 1 dc in 1^st ch-1 sp, v-st in ch-1 sp of next shell, v-st in ch-1 sp of last shell, turn – 1 tr, 1 dc, 2 v-st

Row 5: Ch 2, shell in 1^st v-st, shell in next v-st, [shell, ch 1, 1 tr] in final ch-5 sp, turn – 1 tr, 3 shells

Row 6: Ch 5, 1 dc in 1^st ch-1 sp, [v-st in ch-1 sp of next shell] 2 times, v-st in ch-1 sp of last shell, turn – 1 tr, 1 dc, 3 v-st

Row 7: Ch 2, shell in 1^st v-st, [shell in next v-st] 2 times, [shell, ch 1, 1 tr] in final ch-5 sp, turn – 1 tr, 4 shells

Row 8: Ch 5, 1 dc in 1^st ch-1 sp, [v-st in ch-1 sp of next shell] 3 times, v-st in ch-1 sp of last shell, turn – 1 tr, 1 dc, 4 v-st

Row 9: Ch 2, shell in 1^st v-st, [shell in next v-st] 3 times, [shell, ch 1, 1 tr] in final ch-5 sp, turn – 1 tr, 5 shells

From now on you will make a decrease every 8 rows by leaving last shell unworked

Row 10: Ch 5, 1 dc in 1^st ch-1 sp, * v-st in ch-1 sp of next shell; rep from * across, leaving last shell unworked, turn – 1 tr, 1 dc. 4 v-st

Row 11: Ch 2, * shell in next v-st; rep from * across, working [shell, ch 1, 1 tr] in final ch-5 sp, turn

Row 12: Ch 5, 1 dc in 1^st ch-1 sp, * v-st in ch-1 sp of next shell; rep from * across, turn

Row 13: Ch 2, * shell in next v-st; rep from * across, working [shell, ch 1, 1 tr] in final ch-5 sp, turn

Row 14: Ch 5, 1 dc in 1^st ch-1 sp, * v-st in ch-1 sp of next shell; rep from * across, turn

Row 15: Ch 2, * shell in next v-st; rep from * across, working [shell, ch 1, 1 tr] in final ch-5 sp, turn

Row 16: Ch 5, 1 dc in 1^st ch-1 sp, * v-st in ch-1 sp of next shell; rep from * across, turn

Row 17: Ch 2, * shell in next v-st; rep from * across, working [shell, ch 1, 1 tr] in final ch-5 sp, turn

Rows 18 – 73: Repeat rows 10 – 17

You can finish your shawl at the end of any pattern repeat (row 17)

Finishing

Weave in all loose ends. Soak your shawl in lukewarm water and gently wring in a towel. Lay project out to finished size and pull gently into shape. Pin in place and leave to dry. Take your time pinning finished shawl, and use a pin on each ‘point’ of the shells……it will make a huge difference to the finished piece!
