If you’re looking for an elegant and relaxing crochet project, this lightweight crochet shawl with filet lace is the perfect choice. Made with gradient yarn and the filet crochet technique, the seamless color changes create a beautiful ombré effect.
This lacy rectangular crochet shawl is a rewarding project, especially if you enjoy working with filet lace patterns. Once the repeat is mastered, you can settle into a calming rhythm to create this stunning piece.
You can wear this stunning shawl as a wrap or my preference, style as a cozy scarf!
I first designed this beautiful shawl 5 years ago, and it has been a very popular premium pattern. I am thrilled to now offer it as a free pattern on my blog.

Materials Needed
To create this rectangle crochet shawl, you will need a cake of gradient yarn such as Scheepjes Whirl. This yarn is 4ply/fingering weight, made of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic, and comes in 215-225g/1000m.
The sample shown uses the shade 764 – Red Velvet Sunset. If you prefer, you can substitute any fingering weight yarn (800m – 1000m) to achieve a similar effect.
I used a 3.5mm crochet hook (US G). This size ensures the lace pattern opens up beautifully while keeping the fabric lightweight and drapey.
You’ll also need a darning needle to weave in ends and blocking tools. Blocking is essential to open up the lace filet pattern and achieve the correct dimensions. This shawl showcases gradient yarn beautifully, giving a smooth and striking color transition.

Filet Crochet Technique for this Shawl
This filet lace crochet shawl pattern might be best suited for crocheters with some experience. However, once you establish the 14-row repeat, the pattern becomes straightforward and enjoyable.
The filet crochet technique may seem daunting at first but you will soon see the pattern emerge and enjoy the challenge!
The pattern uses only double crochet stitches to create an open filet design. Take your time following the written instructions. You might like to consider purchasing the low cost printable PDF which includes a detailed crochet chart for visual readers.

Finishing
Wet block wrap and pin out to desired size, leave until completely dry.
Fringing
Cut lengths of yarn approx. 12” long. I used 14 lengths for each side (total of 28). You will need 10 – 15 lengths of yarn for each fringe piece. Fold each piece in half and attach evenly on both
ends of wrap.
