Yarn

The pattern looks so lovely in a gradient cake yarn but 2 skeins of any fingering weight yarn from your stash would also look beautiful – you can get creative with the way you use the colours!

The pattern will work with any weight yarn and matching crochet hook. Once you have the pattern repeat established, you can stop when your shawl is big enough, or you run out of yarn.

I have included a picture tutorial to help you with the first 8 rows, and a handy chart with stitch counts for the amount of double crochet stitches in each wedge of the shawl.

Skill Level –Easy

Only basic stitches are used in this shawl but some concentration is required until the row increases are established. Stitches included are Double Crochet, and Puff Stitch.

Materials

GARN MANUFAKTUR McLana Bobbel – 8551: 4 Ply – 50% acrylic/50% cotton/200g/750m

4 mm crochet hook

You can use 700 – 800m of any fingering weight yarn or yarn weight of your choice and matching hook. 

Measurements

Shawl pictured measures 66in [168cm] on the longest length and 30in [76cm] depth after a light blocking

Notes (read carefully)

•  Pattern is given in US crochet terms, and you can find UK terms in Abbreviations
• Shawl is worked back and forth in rows, beginning at centre back neck.
• Beginning ch 2 does not count as a stitch
• The shawl is made up of 7 wedges each separated by a ch-1 space (even rows) or a PS (odd rows)
• Place a stitch marker in the ch-1 that divides each wedge in even rows in the beginning (so you won’t miss it!)
• Gauge is not important. To achieve a light drape tension, I suggest make a swatch of the first 5 rows and see what hook size works best for you.
• I have included some tips in the first 8 rows to help stitch placement. Once you have the 2-row pattern repeat established, the shawl will work up quickly!
• You can make the shawl smaller or larger by omitting or adding more rows
• Make sure when you are skipping the Puff Stitch, you also skip the ch-1 to close.

Special Stitches

• Puff Stitch (PS): YO and insert hook in indicated stitch and pull up a loop to the height of a hdc, (yo and insert hook in same st and pull up a loop) 4 times in total, yo and pull through all 11 loops, ch 1 to close.

Instructions for Semi Circle Crochet Shawl Pattern

Using 4mm hook, make a magic ring

Row 1: Ch 2 (does not count as a st here and throughout), 7 dc in ring. Pull ring tight to close, turn – 7 dc

Row 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in 1^st st (at base of ch 2), 2 dc in each of the next 5 sts, 1 dc in last st, turn – 13 dc

Row 3: Ch 2, 2 dc in 1^st st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 2 dc in next st; rep from * across, turn – 14 dc, 6 ch-1 sp

Row 4: Ch 2, 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in next st, [ch 1, skip ch-1 sp, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st] rep 6 times, turn – 3 dc in each wedge, 6 ch-1 sp

You will now work pattern instructions repeating the same for each wedge (7 times in total)

Row 5: Ch2, 2dc in 1^st st, 1dc in next 2 sts, [PS (see special stitches) in next ch-1 sp, 2dc in next st, 1dc in next 2 sts] rep 6 times, turn – 4 dc in each wedge, 6 x PS

Row 6: Ch 2, 1 dc in 1^st st, ch 1, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st, [ch 1, place marker in ch-1 sp just made], skip PS [also skip the ch-1 to close PS], 1 dc in next st, ch 1, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st] rep 6 times, turn –   3 dc in each wedge

Row 7: Ch 2, 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st and ch-1 sp of 1^st wedge to marked ch-1 sp, [ PS in marked ch-1 sp, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each st and ch-1 sp of wedge to marked ch-1 sp] rep 6 times, turn – 6 dc in each wedge, 6 PS

Row 8: Ch 2, 1 dc in 1^st st, ch 1, 1 dc in next st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st; rep from * to PS, 1^st wedge complete, [ ch 1, place marker in ch-1 sp just made], skip PS [also skip the ch-1 to close PS], 1 dc in next st, ch 1, 1 dc in next st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st, rep from * across until next PS] rep 6 times, turn – 4 dc in each wedge

Row 9: Ch 2, 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st and ch-1 sp of 1^st wedge to marked ch-1 sp, [ PS in next ch-1 sp, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each st and ch-1 sp of wedge to marked ch-1 sp] rep 6 times, turn – 8 dc in each wedge, 6 PS

You will begin to see the pattern repeat. Each row has 7 wedges in total, each wedge separated by a ch-1 space (even rows) or a PS (odd rows)

Row 10: Ch 2, 1 dc in 1^st st, ch 1, 1 dc in next st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st; rep from * to PS, [ ch 1, place marker in ch-1 sp just made], skip PS [also skip the ch-1 to close PS], 1 dc in next st, ch 1, 1 dc in next st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st, rep from * across until next PS] rep 6 times, turn.

Row 11: Ch 2, 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st and ch-1 sp of 1^st wedge to marked ch-1 sp, [PS in next ch-1 sp, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each st and ch-1 sp to marked ch-1 sp] rep 6 times, turn.

Rows: 12 – 51 Repeat rows 10 & 11

Finishing

Weave in all loose ends. Soak your shawl in lukewarm water and gently wring in a towel. Lay project out to finished size and pull gently into shape. Pin in place and leave to dry.
