Crochet Boho Shawl Details

This is an easy crochet pattern using just double crochet and single crochet stitches. The stitch pattern is a two row repeat and once you have the first few rows established, it is an easy pattern to make.

This is the perfect project if you are looking for a simple pattern for mindful crochet.

This shawl pattern creates a triangle shape, starting from the top and worked down in rows. As you crochet, you’ll increase on both sides and add a center increase, gradually shaping it into the desired triangle size.

Using a ball of gradient yarn means no ends to weave in, and you get a beautiful gradient effect without the need for yarn changes!

Best Yarn for this Crochet Shawl Pattern

For my boho crochet shawl, I used Scheepjes Whirl, a blend of cotton and acrylic that’s light, airy, and perfect for draping. With 1000m per cake, you have a color gradient that transitions smoothly from hue to hue. There’s a whirl for every preference, whether you love the bold drama of Red Velvet Sunrise (the colorway in this shawl) or the subtle charm of pastel shades.

You will need approx.1000 yds of any fingering weight cake yarn for the main body of the shawl and a small amount of a contrast yarn for the fringe.

You could make the shawl smaller and leave enough yarn for the fringe, but I choose to use every meter of the ball of yarn and then used some stash yarn for a fringing.

Abbreviations

US Crochet Terms

  • Beg     beginning
  • Ch       chain
  • St        stitch
  • Sc       single crochet
  • Dc     double crochet
  • Tr      treble crochet
  • Sp     space
  • PM    place marker

Notes (read carefully)

  • Shawl is worked top down in rows. You will increase on both sides and make a centre increase until desired size of triangle is reached.
  • Place a stitch marker in the centre ch-2 space or centre sc to make it easier to find the centre on each row. Move it up as you work.
  • Ch 4 at beginning of a row counts as 1 tr throughout.
  • Ch 1 at beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.
  • The shawl can be made larger or smaller by working more or fewer pattern repeats. This will alter the amount of yarn required.
  • Gauge is not important. To achieve a light drape tension, I suggest make a swatch of the first 7 rows and see what hook size works best for you.
  • I have written out the first 5 rows in full. Once you have the 2-row pattern repeat established, the shawl will work up quickly.
  • Stitch counts (in Italics) are included at the end of the first 5 rows to help you.

Rows 8 – 83: Rep Rows 6 & 7 for pattern.

You can make your shawl smaller or larger by working fewer or more pattern repeats. Make sure you finish on row 7 of repeat.

Finishing

Weave in all loose ends. Soak your shawl in lukewarm water and gently wring in a towel. Lay shawl out to finished size and pull gently into shape. Pin in place and leave to dry.

Add a Fringe to your Crochet Shawl

Cut lengths of a contrast yarn approximately 25cm/10” in length. Make fringes using 7 strands of yarn in each and fold in half to make each fringe 14 strands.

You can create a fuller fringe if you wish, by adding more pieces of yarn. Attach fringes evenly along the bottom edge of shawl and trim if needed.

  1. What a gorgeous shawl! However, I find it a little confusing, I’m so sorry. I would love to master it but rows four and five are proving tricky for some reason. I would love to make it though. Thank you

    1. The stitch counts for the first 5 rows is given in ittalics at the end of the rows:) Hope that helps!

  2. Thank you for sharing your pattern. I look forward to making it. I am just wondering about the stitch counts on rows 2 and 4. They both state there is a ch-2 space but the row instructions are all ch-3 with a sc into the prior row ch-2 space.
I assume the pm is moved into the sc and the following row the v-stitch, 2ch, v-stitch goes into the sc?

    1. That is correct. The marker really helps to keep track of the centre as it is easily missed:)

  3. Thank you for all your wonderful patterns but especially enjoying this one which I’m making up in more muted colours. It’s so simple but so effective !
