How to Crochet a Summer Shawl

When you’re making a summer shawl, look for crochet patterns that use lightweight yarns or open stitch patterns—think tall stitches like double or treble crochet with chains in between. The lightest shawls usually combine both of these features. But as you’ll see in this collection, the right stitch pattern can still create a breathable, drapey fabric, even with DK or worsted weight yarn.

One of the best things about open stitches is how much space they create without using much yarn. You can make a generously sized shawl with surprisingly little yardage—often just one skein or cake, and rarely more than two. It’s the perfect excuse to dig through your stash and put those single skeins to good use.
