If you can crochet a granny square, you can make this cute granny square Christmas tree ornament in an evening! Crochet one simple solid granny square, fold it into a triangle, add a little trunk and a hanging loop, and that is it! It only takes small amounts of yarn, so it is perfect for using up your yarn scraps.
Last year so many of you made my popular Jolly Bauble Christmas Tree, and I loved seeing your photos. So this year I have been designing some new versions, and this simple granny tree decoration is the first one. I love the simplicity of this square. It is so easy to make and the result is so cute!Â
Hang them on your tree, string a few together into a garland, or pop one on a gift as a handmade tag. Once you make one, I think you will want a whole forest!

Granny Square Christmas Tree Pattern Details
The tree starts as a classic solid granny square, worked in just five rounds with a new color on each one.
The finished square is then folded into a triangle and sewn in place. The stripes of the granny square form lovely little festive stripes across your tree, which I think is such a fun effect.
To finish, you crochet a tiny trunk right onto the bottom of the tree and sew on a chain loop for hanging. A bead at the top adds a sweet festive touch.

Yarn Suggestions for the Granny Square Christmas Tree
For my trees I used scraps of Scheepjes River Washed and Stone Washed, a sport weight cotton and acrylic blend. It has a lovely soft texture and the stitches look really crisp, which helps the tree hold its shape.
Any sport weight, DK or light worsted weight yarn will work with a 4mm hook. You can also use a different weight with a matching hook, and your tree will just be a little bigger or smaller. A round of metallic yarn would add some sparkle too!

How to Fold Your Crochet Square into a Tree
- Place your square as below. Place it with the wrong side (WS) facing you.

- Fold the sides in. Take the left and right corners and fold them inward so that they meet in the center. Pin in place if needed.

- Fold the bottom up. Bring the bottom corner up towards the center, creating a neat triangle shape.
- Secure the folds. Use a couple of pins to hold everything in position.
- Sew the seams using matching yarn. Carefully stitch along the folds to secure the shape and form the triangular tree.

6. Turn front side out.

Tree Trunk
Using any color yarn and with right side of tree facing out, find the 4 center stitches at the bottom of the tree. Insert your hook into the first of the 4 stitches (you may have to wriggle your hook to find a space but it will work out fine).

Row 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, turn – 4 sc
Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn – 4 sc
Row 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across – 4 sc. Fasten off yarn and weave in all threads.
Hanging Loop
With any yarn, ch 23. Fasten off yarn leaving a tail to attach.
Fold over hanging loop and sew each end securely to top of the tree. Weave in all threads. Add a bead for an extra festive touch!
