Materials for Crochet Christmas Bunting

The granny triangles are not only easy to make but are also a great way for to use up yarn scraps.

I used Sirdar Stories, a DK weight (light worsted) yarn. You’ll also need a 3.50 mm crochet hook and a yarn needle to weave in those loose ends. You could use other yarn weights, just make sure to use a matching hook size.

Cotton yarns are best for their durability and vibrant color options, but acrylic yarn would also work well.

Choosing Colors for your Crochet Bunting

I have included the full list of colors I used below in the materials section. You could chose 5 or 6 festive holiday shades and it will look amazing for a Christmas garland.

You could also make bunting with theme colors for any occasions – birthdays, weddings, baby showers, the color combinations are endless!

I made 9 triangles that were joined together with single crochet stitches. A short crocheted chain made a hanging loop on each side.

Finishing Your Bunting

Weave in all ends. Pin triangles on a block board (or an ironing board) by placing a pin in all 3 corners. Steam with an iron and leave to dry.

Joining the Triangles

Join the triangles as follows: Using any color yarn, ch 20, sl st into the 1st chain to form a hanging loop. Holding the 1st triangle with the right side facing, work 1 sc in the corner ch-2 sp, 1 sc in each st across, 1 sc in next corner ch-2 sp – 25 sc

Taking the next triangle, * work 1 sc in the 1st corner ch-2 sp, 1 sc in each st across, 1 sc in next corner ch-2 sp; repeat from * until all the triangles are attached. Ch 20, sl st into the 1st ch made, to form a 2nd hanging loop. Fasten off and weave in all threads.

Tassels

  • In contrast colors of your choice, use a small notebook approx. 3 – 4” in width.
  • Cut a 12” length of yarn, and lay across top of book – this will be used to tie top of tassel.
  • Wrap yarn around book approx. 10 times (depends how thick you like your tassel)
  • Using the 12” tie, knot top of tassel tightly. Cut tassel at opposite end.
  • Cut another length of yarn and wrap around tassel 0.5” from top 3 times and knot ends together.
  • Trim if needed and attach to the bottom of each triangle, sewing securely.
  • I trimmed my tassels to measure 3”

How to Care for your Crochet Bunting

To keep your precious crochet Christmas bunting looking its best year after year, a little TLC goes a long way. Store your bunting in a cool, dry place, preferably in a cloth bag to prevent moisture and dust buildup.

If it needs freshening up, a gentle hand wash with mild detergent will do the trick. Lay flat to dry and avoid direct sunlight to maintain those vibrant colors.
