Daisy Patch Granny Square 12-Inch Pattern (Free)

granny 12 inch afghan square

Sharing is caring!

The Daisy Patch Granny Square is a pretty 12-inch crochet afghan square made from four little puff stitch flower motifs, joined together for a sweet patchwork effect. This easy daisy crochet square pattern looks lovely on its own, or you can make a whole pile of them for a cozy granny square blanket.

And because it measures 12 inches, it slots right into any sampler blanket that uses 12-inch squares! This one was fun to design, and I’m already planning a large blanket using my scrap yarn. You’ll find the free pattern below, with a photo tutorial.

Pattern Overview

  • Skill Level: Easy
  • Yarn: Worsted/Medium weight, Lion Brand Color Theory
  • Hook: 5mm
  • Finished size: 12 x 12 in [30.5 x 30.5 cm]
  • Stitches used: single crochet, double crochet, puff stitch, double crochet 2 and 3 together, and double and treble crochet clusters

Ways to Use Your 12 Inch Granny Squares

A 12 inch crochet granny afghan square is such a handy size. Twelve squares joined three by four make a lovely lap blanket, and you can keep adding squares for a bigger throw or bed cover. If you are working on a sampler blanket with 12 inch squares, the Daisy Patch granny would make a lovely contribution and adds a cheerful pop of flowers among the other textures.

The 2026 Granny Stitch Sampler CAL

The Daisy Patch Granny Square is featured in the Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket CAL, hosted by MadameStitch. Twelve designers have each created a brand-new granny square design, and every square features the granny stitch in a new and creative way.

I think you will love this FREE collaborative Blanket CAL. You can read all about this crochet event in this blog post.

My Daisy Patch Granny Square is the 6th square in the CAL. You’ll find granny stitch (three double crochets worked together in the same stitch or space) in round 3, where they surround the puff stitch daisy flower center and really make the colors pop! The four smaller daisy squares are joined together for a patchwork effect.

Yarn Suggestions for the Daisy Patch Granny Square

I used the following amount of yarn and hooks for my square:

  • Small amounts of worsted weight yarn in five different colors
  • 5 mm hook

I used Lion Brand Color Theory for my square. This was my first time using this yarn and I was so impressed. It was beautiful and soft to crochet with and has great stitch definition, so the puff stitches and petals really stand out. It is a medium (#4) weight acrylic yarn that is easy to care for and comes in a lovely range of colors.

You only need small amounts of each color, so this is a great pattern for using up leftover yarn from your stash. Any medium weight yarn will work, just keep your yarn weight and hook size the same for every square so they all come out at 12 inches.

Joining Squares

Arrange your 4 squares into a 2×2 grid, right side facing up, alternating colors as shown.

Holding two squares with right sides together, whip stitch along one edge to join.

Join into pairs first (top two squares, then bottom two squares), then join the two pairs together along the centre seam to form one large square.

(You can use your favourite join here instead of a whip stitch join)

Large square should measure 11.5” after joining.

Border

With right side facing, join yarn in any st.

Round 1: Ch 1 (does not count as st). Work 1 sc in each st around, working 1 sc in each ch-sp along the sides, 1 sc at the centre of each join, and 3 sc in each corner. Join with a sl st to first sc. Fasten off yarn – 184 sc
