Colorful Christmas Crochet Trees from a Granny Square

These cheerful crochet Christmas tree ornaments are made from a simple square inspired by my Daisy granny square. I’ve used this design in everything from a tote bag, to a baby blanket, to a placemat and coaster set. But with bright colors and a classic tree shape, it takes on a festive holiday feel.

You can also try this easy folding technique with other square patterns, like a traditional or solid granny square. Just keep in mind how the design will sit once the square is turned on its point and folded into shape.

Details of the Jolly Bauble Crochet Christmas Tree Pattern

This crochet Christmas tree pattern starts with a granny square, worked flat as usual. To make the tree, place your finished square with the wrong side facing you. Fold the left and right corners into the centre so they touch, then fold the bottom corner up to form a triangle shape.

Pin the folds in place, then sew along the seams to hold the shape. That’s it – you now have a little crochet Christmas tree decoration! I made so many of these as I know family and friends will be thrilled to receive them.

Yarn Suggestions for the Crochet Christmas Tree Ornament Pattern

I used the following amount of yarn and hooks for my ornament:

  • Scraps of any sport weight, DK, or light worsted weight yarn
  • 4 mm crochet hook

For my ornaments, I used scraps of Scheepjes River Washed and Stone Washed yarn, a light weight (#3) cotton/acrylic blend with a lovely texture. I love using bright, cheerful colors for Christmas décor – they bring such energy and warmth to the holidays!

Feel free to experiment with different color combinations. These would also look lovely in traditional in green and red, or with an accent of metallic yarn to add a little sparkle. However you make them, these crochet bauble trees are sure to add some festive charm to your home.

  1. Beautiful, Carmen. Each year I make something small to tuck into Christmas cards. Wish I had seen your beauties before I made a stack of plain green and brown trees, that now I want to decorate. Yours are so beautiful finished that they don’t need any embellishment. Bless your creative brain and your generous spirit.

    1. Hi Debbie. I found them in a local craft shop. They sell bags of beads for crafting. And thank you!

  2. Love these so much! Thank you for sharing the pattern.
Do you attach the bead at the top somehow or just put it over the loop?
I want to make some to attach to the top of gifts but don’t want the bead to fall off.

    1. Thank you! I used a small crochet hook to pull the hanging loop through the bead. It might be a good idea to tie a small piece of thread to hold the bead in place if you are attaching to gifts’

  3. Thank you for the pattern
We made 42 for our Rainbow Guides. We put a button on the back to fasten them into a pocket and put a Christmas badge and small packet of sweets inside. They loved them!
