Why Crochet Coasters?

There are loads of reasons to crochet your own coasters! Here are a few of my favourites:

  • They are a small quick project to make
  • Opportunity to practice and improve crochet skills
  • Easy to crochet using basic stitches
  • Protect surfaces from heat and moisture
  • You get to be creative with different colors and use up stash!
  • They are cost effective and environmentally friendly
  • A set of coasters make great gifts for family and friends

How Big should Crochet Coasters Be?

It is a personal preference, but most coasters are between 4 to 6 inches in size. You want it big enough to place a mug or glass on, if displaying on a coffee table.

It is easy to make your coaster larger or smaller and most patterns are adaptable.

Best Yarn for Crochet Coasters

I recommend Cotton Yarn for best results. Cotton is durable and easy to wash and dry, and also holds its shape well. It also absorbs spills and any dampness and can manage high temperatures. A cotton blend yarn would also work well.

Crochet coasters are great for using up any scrap lightweight or worsted weight yarn you have in your stash. Acrylic yarn is not recommended.
