These lacy crochet squares are wonderfully versatile! Sew 4 or 6 squares together for a lovely summer place mat, create a beautiful market bag perfect for warm weather shopping, or join them into a stunning lace blanket.

I crocheted a colorful blanket using these gorgeous squares for my Carousel Blanket a few years ago, and it remains one of my favorite designs. These pretty granny lace squares will become a treasured addition to your pattern collection!

Construction of the Crochet Lace Flower Square

For this crochet square you will use only basic stitches – double crochets and chains. It is accessible even for beginners, with a little practice.

The pattern builds from the center outwards in rounds, similar to a granny square. In round 4, you’ll create the flower petals using double crochet 4 together clusters, which give the square its distinctive floral appearance.

The final round consists of double crochets to square off the design, giving you a neat finish that’s perfect for joining into larger projects.

For a finished look, I recommend blocking your squares after completion. This helps the lace details open up beautifully and ensures your squares are uniform in size for joining into larger crochet lace work projects like blankets or place mats.

Yarn and Colors for the Crochet Flower Square

For my sample squares, I used DK weight cotton yarn with a smaller than recommended hook to give the squares more structure. This helps the lace details stand out beautifully while ensuring your finished project holds its shape well.

The pattern is written using a single color for the samples, which shows the intricate lace pattern beautifully. However, you could have fun with different color combinations! Try contrasting colors for different rounds to highlight the flower detail, or keep it elegant and simple with a monochrome approach.

  1. I have recently joined your email. Your patterns are just what I have been looking for! (I have been crocheting since I am 10 yrs old).
Although your patterns show up in my emails, I am unable to print them. I do not use instagram or pintrest. Is there a way for me to print the patterns from my email?

    1. Hi! You can purchase a low cost printable PDF for my patterns (links in each blog post). Hope that helps!

  2. I liked this pattern when I saw the solid colors, but was wowed with the centers a different color. I will be using this pattern for sure. Thank you .

  3. I am using your square to make a cardigan, how would I make a half square for the collar area?
    thanks.

    1. I am sorry but I don’t have a pattern for a half square. The pdf contains a chart and you could use that to help you work one out. Or you could make a plain triangle in the size needed!
