Inspiration for the Vintage Crochet Coaster Pattern

My aunt Biddy was a skilled crocheter, and as a child I was always fascinated with her intricate lace crochet work. She worked with fine cotton thread and tiny steel hooks. So different from the ergonomic hooks we have access to these days.

She won many prizes for her work all over Ireland in the 60’s and 70’s. She was such an inspiration for me and I thought of her when designing these lace coasters. I wonder what would she think of my crochet. She would certainly have been enthralled with the selection of yarn that we use!

This crochet coaster pattern captures the delicate look of vintage doilies while using thicker yarn and an approachable design that works up in no time!

Yarn Suggestions for the Vintage Lace Coasters

I used the following amount of yarn and hooks for my coasters:

  • 10g (25yds) of DK weight yarn in main color
  • Small amount of contrast color
  • 3.5 mm hook

These crochet lace coasters were made using Friends Cotton 8/6 from Hobbii. They also make a wonderful scrap yarn project, so feel free to use any leftover bits of DK weight cotton from your stash.

I do recommend sticking with cotton, as it creates coasters that are both absorbent and durable enough for everyday use.
