How to Crochet a Large Flower for Beginners

Crocheting a large flower can be a fun and rewarding project for beginners. My large crochet flower pattern uses basic crochet stitches with 2 extra to challenge you!

One way to add texture and interest to your flower is by using popcorn stitches. They are easy to learn and can give your flower a unique look. You will also use a ‘spike stitch’ which is just a long single crochet. I have included photo tutorials below to help you.

With a little practice, you’ll be able to create beautiful flowers that you can use to embellish hats, bags, and other accessories.

What to do with Large Crochet Flowers

These large Crochet Flowers work up fast, and are perfect for adding as embellishments to your projects.

  • You can add a pin to the back of the flower to make a brooch for a special gift
  • One would be beautiful attached to a Summer Hat for a child!
  • Add a flower to a headband for funky festival style!
  • String a few flowers together for a cheerful floral garland
  • These appliques are perfect for many projects including yarnbombing projects

Best Yarn for Crochet Flowers

I use scraps of DK weight yarn for my flowers, but you can use any yarn weight you wish – just use a matching hook.

My favourite yarn for making flowers is a cotton yarn as it washes well, keeps its shape and comes in a huge selection of colors! With excellent stitch definition, cotton yarn is perfect for smaller projects like these crochet flowers.

If you use worsted weight yarn, your flower will be larger and also beautiful!

  1. The big flower I will love as soon as I can figure out row 5. I’m missing something. Can you help me on this row. Thank you.

  2. Sorry, the problem was that I just needed to look at pictures you provided along with your instructions & then I was fine. Love the big flower pattern!

  3. I love this pattern! I just made one in a solid color just to see how the pattern plays out. I also struggled with row 5 until I took the time to read the whole step and try again. I had missed putting the sc in the ch sp at top of pedal.

I have an idea of what I want to do with this pattern. I amgoing to make several of these in the solid color I have and create a shaw for my mother-in-law!

  4. I thoroughly enjoyed making this little flower. I plan to use it in a square for the front of one of my crochet doll creations.
    So lovely!
