How to Get the Pattern for Advent Echos Scarf

Inspiration for the Crochet Scarf
This scarf is a nostalgic journey through rich, evocative colors that capture the essence of Irish heritage. I used 12 of the mini skeins from the 2022 advent calendar from Olann yarns that I had been saving in my stash. Sadly this yarn company is no longer in business but any 12 mini skeins will look amazing.
Each mini skein reflected the theme of Patrick Kavanagh’s poem “Advent,” bringing together shades that remind me of my grandmother’s farmhouse kitchen in rural Ireland. The memories tied to these yarns made making this scarf a special project for me.

Yarn Details for the Mini Skein Scarf
The scarf pictured uses 12 mini skeins of fingering weight yarn, each weighing 20g and measuring 80m each. You will need approximately 1000 meters of yarn for the pattern and a 4mm hook, plus a small amount of yarn for the contrast join and border.
The solid granny squares are easy and fast to work up and are arranged in a 3 x 19 layout. I used a fingering weight grey yarn from my stash for joining and adding a delicate border.
You could make this scarf wider or longer by adding more squares. You could easily make a large crochet wrap by increasing the squares to a 4 x 20 layout. It really is a great stash buster crochet project!
TIP: I used muted solid colors for this scarf, but a speckled hand-dyed yarn would look stunning too. If possible, select 6 shades in a similar neutral tone and 6 contrasting shades to create a beautifully balanced and eye-catching scarf.

Color Placement Tips
When creating your 57 squares, start by evenly distributing all your colors in Rounds 1 and 2 to create a balanced base. For Rounds 3 and 4, have fun with contrasting shades—don’t stress about precision, as the overall effect will be stunning.
As you lay out your squares, arrange them in a way that is visually pleasing to you. Snapping a quick photo of your layout can be a helpful reference when it’s time to join everything together!

Notes for Joining Squares
I used a grey fingering weight yarn from my stash for joining and the border, creating a feature of the contrasting shade. You will join the squares with a whip stitch joining method working through the back loops only. I find it easiest to do this at a table for better alignment.
Assembly and Joining
- Layout your squares following your chosen layout placement. Join by attaching first in rows of 3, and then attach each row together to form 19 rows.
- Holding RS of motifs together, you will join your motifs in the back loop only by sewing (whip stitching) together. You can use a crochet slip stitch or single crochet joining method if you prefer.
- Try to keep your stitches loose and join your motifs as evenly as you can.

Border
Join contrast yarn in any stitch on the side of your scarf.
Round 1: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each st around, working 15 sc in the side of each square. You will work a picot (see special stitches) in the space between each square, and in each of the 4 corners. Join with a sl st to beg sc, fasten off yarn.
Finishing
Weave in all loose ends. Soak your scarf in lukewarm water and gently wring in a towel. Lay project out to finished size and pull gently into shape. Pin in place and leave to dry.

Hi!
I love the colors in this scarf. Can you please tell me the colors and yarn used?
Hi! Sadly the yarn I used was part of an Advent calender from a yarn company that is no longer in business:)
Hi! Can I make this beautiful scarf from cotton yarn, please?
Best
Marianne
Hi! You could certainly. The cotton yarn would work well:)
