This bookmark was inspired by scraps of hand dyed fingering weight yarn I had leftover from a bigger project (that project will be published later this year and I can’t wait to share it!). Instructions
Flower Motif (make 3)
Round 1: Using 1st color, make a magic ring, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), work 11 dc into ring, sl st to top of beg ch-3 to join. Pull ring tight and fasten off yarn – 12 dc
Round 2: Join next color between any 2 dc from Round 1. Ch 2 (counts as 1 sc, ch 1), *1 sc in sp between next 2 dc, ch 1; rep from * 10 more times, sl st to beg sc to join. Fasten off yarn – 12 sc, 12 x ch-1 sps
Round 3: Join next color in any ch-1 sp, ch 1 (does not count as a st), 2 sc in same sp, 2 sc in each ch-1 sp around, sl st to beg sc to join. Fasten off yarn – 24 sc
Round 4: Join next color in any st, * ch 2, 1 hdc in same st, ch 1, skip 1 st, sl st in next st; rep from * 11 more times. Fasten off yarn and weave in all ends – 12 petals
Repeat for all 3 motifs, changing up your color order for a scrappy look, or keeping it consistent for a matching set.
Finishing
Joining the Motifs
Lay your 3 flower motifs in a row, right side up, in the order you’d like them to appear on your finished bookmark.
Move two adjacent flowers close together so that one petal from each flower overlaps slightly, tip to tip. Using matching yarn and a yarn needle, sew through both petal tips with 1–2 small stitches to join them together. Do the same with the next pair of overlapping petals along that same join, so each pair of flowers is attached at two points.
Repeat this to join the second and third flowers together in the same way, until all 3 motifs are connected into one flat strip.
Weave in all ends.
Top: Hanging Loop
Join yarn to a petal tip at the top of your top motif with a sl st.
Ch 10, sl st into the next petal tip along to form a loop. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Bottom: Leaf and Chain
- Using color of choice, ch 8.
- Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next ch, 1 dc in each of the next 4 ch, work [2 hdc, ch 2, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook (picot made), 2 hdc] in last ch.
- Turn so that you are working on the opposite side of the foundation ch, 1 dc in each of the next 4 ch, 1 hdc in next ch, 1 sc in last ch, join with a sl st to first sc made.
- Ch 5, sl st into centre of last motif, between 2 petals to attach the leaf. Fasten off. Weave in all ends.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does gauge matter for this bookmark?
Not really. Since it’s such a small, quick accessory, exact gauge isn’t important here. Just match the stitch counts given for each round and you’ll be fine.
Can I make the bookmark bigger or smaller?
Yes. Using a lighter or heavier yarn with a matching hook size will change the finished size, or you could add or remove a flower motif to make the bookmark shorter or longer.
Can I use this flower motif for anything besides a bookmark?
Definitely. The flower motif on its own would make a lovely brooch pin, hair clip, or even a gift tag topper if you wanted to give it a try.
