Choosing Colors for your Crochet Blankets

This crochet blanket is a riot of gorgeous color and a joy to crochet! The squares are not traditional granny squares but are just as easy to crochet.
Who doesn’t love a scrap yarn crochet blanket using leftover yarn? But you can also choose a selection of 12 colors for your blanket and I will explain how you can generate a color palette for your crochet squares.

For my crochet blanket, I picked 11 balls of Stylecraft Special Aran in various shades, complemented by 4 balls in a main color.

You can find inspiration anywhere for your colors. I choose an image with colors that I loved and uploaded it into the app. I changed the filter to the yarn I wanted (they have so many yarn brands to choose from!) and the app generated the image below.

I then played around adding and removing yarn shades until I was happy.

Design your Crochet Blanket

Here is my final color choices for my blanket. I crocheted this blanket last year and I loved having it all planned in advance. I did sometimes change a color here and there but having the printed chart was amazing, and I knew that I would have enough yarn to use up all my colors.

Blanket Size

  • Each square measures 7 x 7 in [18 x 18 cm] Gauge will depend on yarn used and individual tension
  • Finished Blanket has 63 squares (7 x 9) with a border and is approx. 51 x 65 in [130 x 165 cm]

Material List for Blanket

I choose Stylecraft Special Aran for my blanket. I love this yarn for its quality and wearability. It creates a weighty blanket and as it is 100% acrylic, it is washable and durable. I purchased my yarn from Woollycastle.ie

Use any worsted weight yarn you wish and I am sure you can color match the shades in the blanket in any brand with a big selection of colors (or have fun choosing your own colors!).

Here is a list of the yarn and materials I used:

  • Stylecraft Special Aran – 100% acrylic/214yds/196m/10
  • 4 balls Sage (MC)
  • 1 ball each (CC): Spice, Pomegranate, Mustard, Pale Rose, Mocha, Cream, Lipstick, Fondant, Teal, Gold, Copper
  • 5mm & 5.5mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle

Can I Make this a Crochet Scrap Blanket?

You can! You can use any other worsted weight or aran weight yarns from your yarn stash. I choose a worsted weight yarn as I wanted my blanket to be heavy and cozy.

If you are using yarn scraps I suggest you include 4 balls of a main color and your finished blanket will then have a cohesive look. Try and use yarn of a similar brand and weight to ensure your tension stays the same.

Aim for about 400g of the main color and between 900g to 1000g of different colors. Check out the materials list for the exact colors I used to replicate this beautiful blanket.

You can also use a dk weight yarn if you wish. Your square will be slightly smaller. I suggest if using a different yarn weight, you crochet one square in your chosen yarn and check measurements. You will be able to work out how many squares you need to make a blanket in the size you want.

Notes for Joining Blanket Squares

  • You can use a yarn needle to sew squares together if preferred.
  • Joining instructions are given for blanket pictured. You can also make a larger or smaller blanket from this guide. Blanket uses 63 squares in total
  • Layout squares in rows of 7 x 9 squares. Refer to image of the complete blanket as a guideline.
  • It may be helpful to use stitch holders to connect the unworked sides and edges of the squares so the strips of squares will hold together until all seams are completed.
  • Seams are worked by holding 2 squares with RS together and inserting the hook through the back loops of both squares and making a sl st join loosely.

Arrange the squares in your preferred layout. The joining of the squares is done in continuous rows, square by square until an entire row is finished. You will only cut your yarn when you reach the end of a row.

When you are happy with the layout begin to join the squares as follows:

Joining Squares

First, join all the horizontal rows of the blanket and then join the vertical rows.

You will join each row to the one below as follows:

Horizontal Join – Using MC, take the first square of row 1 and the first square of row 2, and holding RS together, place hook in both ch-2 corner spaces. Ch1, 1 sc in ch-2 corner space of both squares, sl st (loosely) in back loop only in each st of both squares, across to next ch-2 sp, 1 sc in ch-2 sp (both squares), * pick up your next 2 squares, 1 sc in next ch-2 sp (both squares), sl st in back loop only in each st of both squares across, 1 sc in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * across row, making 1 sc in final ch-2 sp. Fasten off.

Join the third and following rows in the same way until you have 9 strips with 7 squares in each. Fasten off yarn.

Vertical Join – Turn partially joined blanket and work the un-joined squares in the same way as the horizontal seams, crocheting over the tops of the horizontal seams. (Tip – make a ch-1 over the seams between each 1 sc) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Border

Work border rounds with RS facing throughout. Use a smaller hook if needed (I used a 5 mm hook)

Round 1: Join MC in any st. Ch 1 (does not count as a st), make 1 sc in each st around, making 1 sc in each ch-2 sp (where the squares meet) and working [1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc] in each corner ch-2 sp. Join with a sl st to beg sc, fasten off – 23 sc across each square

Round 2: Join next color in any st, ch 1 (does not count as a st), 1 hdc in each st around, working [1 hdc, ch 3, 1 hdc] in each corner ch-1 sp. Join with a sl st to beg hdc, fasten off.

Round 3: Join next color in any st, ch 1 (does not count as a st), 1 hdc in each st around, working [1 hdc, ch 3, 1 hdc] in each corner ch-1 sp. Join with a sl st to beg hdc, fasten off.

Tip: In round 4, push tr forward before you make the next sc to make it pop out.

Round 4: Join next color in any hdc before a ch-3 corner sp, ch 1 (does not count as a st), 1 hdc in same st, [1 tr, 1 sc, 1 tr] in ch-3 sp, 1 sc in next st, * [1 tr in next st, 1 sc in next st] rep from [ ] across, working last sc in st before next ch-3 corner sp, ** [1 tr, 1 sc, 1 tr] in ch-3 sp, 1 sc in next st; rep from * to * twice more, and from * to ** once more, leaving out the last hdc. Join with a sl st to beg hdc, fasten off.
