Easy Crochet Baby Blanket Patterns

What makes a crochet baby blanket pattern fast and easy? For this collection, I’ve chosen mostly patterns made with heavier yarn weights (at least Aran/worsted-weight and many bulky or super bulky) and larger crochet hooks. Thicker yarns make bigger stitches, which means you need fewer stitches to create a substantially-sized blanket.

Additionally, these patterns use simple pattern repeats that are easy to remember. You save time by not having to look at your pattern every few stitches. You can work these basic stitches without paying close attention, which means you can fit in crochet time while watching TV or talking with a friend.

What about Holes in Baby Blankets?

There are varying opinions on whether or not a crochet baby blanket should have holes or not. Some worry about baby’s fingers becoming tangled in large holes. Others believe that an open stitch pattern allows baby to breathe better, if the blanket should accidentally cover their face.

Because of different tastes and opinions, I’ve included some baby blanket crochet patterns with dense fabric and few to no holes. Others are more open and airy. If you’re concerned about safety, baby blankets don’t have to be used while sleeping. You can always use the blanket as a floor mat, display it as nursery decor, or use it for a photo prop.

No matter which stitch pattern you choose or how you use the it, the most important thing is to supervise the baby carefully while they’re using the blanket.

What Size Should a Baby Blanket Be?

Baby blanket size can vary quite a lot, depending on its use and the age of the baby. This post provides a table with measurements for several sizes of baby blanket, from a small lovey to toddler size.

Some of these blankets, particularly the ones worked on a diagonal, are perfect for adjusting the size, since you can simply stop increasing (and begin decreasing) when you reach the desired length and width.

For blankets using a starting chain, simply use a longer or shorter chain to begin with. If your pattern gives a stitch multiple, that can help you determine how many chains to start with. For example, say the stitch multiple is a “multiple of 3+1.” You would chain until your blanket reaches the width you want, then add or remove a stitch or two so that your stitch count is a multiple of three plus one (91, 121, etc.).

No matter which of baby blanket crochet pattern you choose, I’m confident you can create a lovely blanket that you will be proud to give to any little girl or boy.
