Handmade washcloths make wonderful gifts and this crochet moss stitch washcloth is an easy pattern for a beginner crocheter to start with.

I love the crochet moss stitch. It is often called linen or seed stitch too. This easy stitch pattern has a great texture, is reversible and is also perfect for making dish cloths.

This beautiful stitch was also used in my crochet moss stitch scarf.

Crocheted washcloths make a lovely baby shower gift or a thoughtful present for anyone who appreciates handmade items. Add a bar of handmade soap and they are the perfect gift!

Best Yarn for Crochet Washcloths

For this easy crochet washcloth pattern, worsted weight cotton yarn is your best bet. Opt for 100% cotton or cotton blends, as they offer both durability and absorbency—ideal qualities for washcloths and dishcloths.

Mix it up by using a single shade or combining different colors for a vibrant touch in your bathroom or kitchen. Check out my cheerful colorful crochet dishcloths!

You will only need a small amount of yarn, around 60 – 70m of worsted weight, so they are a great way to use up those odd balls of cotton yarn in your stash.

For crochet hook size, a 5 mm crochet hook works well with worsted weight cotton yarn, while a 4 mm crochet hook pairs well with a lighter weight cotton yarn. I used a dk weight yarn for my Spring Fresh crochet washcloth.

For this pattern I used an aran/worsted weight cotton yarn and a 5 mm hook.

What is the Best Crochet Stitch for a Washcloth?

Anytime you learn a new crochet stitch, work up an easy crochet washcloth to practice your new stitches! Basic crochet stitches like the single crochet are great as it is just an easy repeat row.

Or make a simple square using half double crochet or double crochet stitches.

If you’re looking to learn new stitches, the moss stitch and waffle stitch are also excellent choices. I used the sedge stitch for my easy crochet dishcloth pattern

How Many Stitches Do You Need to Crochet a Washcloth?

For a standard-sized washcloth, start with a chain of around 35-40. If using basic stitches, this should give you an 8-9 inch square.

For this free crochet washcloth pattern, you’ll chain 36 for the foundation row. At the end of the row, turn your work and repeat the row until your washcloth is a square.

Each of the rows in this pattern start with a chain 1, and at the end of the next row, you will work your last single crochet into that chain 1 space.

This gives an even edge to your cloth and removes the need for a border. But you could add a border edge if you wish.

What Size Should a Crochet Washcloth Be?

The optimal size for a washcloth or dishcloth is an 8-9 inch square. You can adjust the size by adding or reducing your foundation chain.
