Check out our cute free pattern for a crochet striped baby hat in 3 sizes. Perfect for beginners, this easy design will keep your little one stylish and cozy!

Crochet baby hats make a wonderful last-minute baby shower gift. When my twin granddaughters arrived prematurely 4 years ago, I made many adorable little hats using this easy pattern in one evening. I used different colors for each of their precious heads, and they were gratefully received in the hospital.

This crochet hat pattern will become your go-to for a quick make for a new baby!

Details of Crochet Baby Hat Pattern

This pattern uses a DK weight yarn and a 4 mm crochet hook. While I used an easy-to-wash acrylic yarn for practicality, feel free to use a cotton yarn or a cotton/acrylic mix for a softer feel.

You can customize each hat with different colored stripes for baby girls or baby boys if you prefer. Or you can make the pattern in a single color.

The pattern comes in sizes newborn to 6 months. The body of the hat is made in stripes, changing color every row. There is no need to weave in ends between color changes; simply carry the yarn up the inside of the hat.

You can add a pom pom to the top of the hat, or add a small crochet bow as a cute embellishment. You may also enjoy this collection of free patterns for crochet baby hats!

Crochet Baby Hat Pattern for Beginners

This pattern is great for beginner crochet! Tip – count your stitches on each round as you go. You will find a stitch count at the end of each round in the pattern, and it is so helpful to keep you on track.

This simple baby hat crochet pattern starts with a magic circle and is worked in rounds, from the top down. You will only use double crochet stitches for the body of the hat and then finish off with a few rounds of single crochet.

It is a fast baby hat to crochet and easy to customise with colors to match an outfit. The sweet little bow adds an adorable finish.

You can find a pattern for the crochet bow further down the page.

Notes on Changing Colors

The hat is crocheted with two colors, alternating colors each round. You will change color each round.

At the end of each round you will join with a slip stitch, dropping Color A and making last yarn over with Color B, and vice versa. You are then ready for the next round with a new color. You will be carrying both yarns on the inside of your work as you make your hat.

You will start odd rounds with Color A, and even rounds with Color B. The final 2 rounds are worked in Color A.
