My granny Christmas baubles pattern has been a festive favorite for years, with crocheters worldwide creating thousands of these little gems. This year, I decided to go bigger and supersize the baubles! I used a worsted weight chenille yarn and a 5mm crochet hook, but any worsted weight/aran yarn would work just as well.
The pattern for the original smaller granny crochet baubles will cover a standard Christmas ball approx. 8 inches in diameter and these big baubles are 11 inches around! The cozy chenille yarn make them so squishy and soft to touch.

Finding the Perfect Insert for your Baubles
I found some Styrofoam baubles at my local craft store and discovered that the 90mm size fits perfectly with a few tweaks to my original granny bauble pattern. I am sure you can find some in a craft shop near you or online.
If you prefer, you can stuff the baubles with toy filling instead for a squishier feel—great for families with kids!

Assembly Tips for your Christmas Baubles
To make these supersized baubles, simply crochet two sides using my granny bauble pattern. Slip both pieces over the Styrofoam ball, making sure the right sides face out, and sew them together firmly.
Leave a small space for the hanging loop and use a long thread from your final round to stitch the two halves together. Add some jute twine for hanging, and for a bit of extra flair, slip on colorful beads if you like!
When you’re fitting each half around the Styrofoam ball, expect to stretch the pieces slightly—this is normal! If you find the fit a bit tight, simply add another round of single crochet stitches to each side to give a little more room.
Granny Christmas Crochet Baubles perfectly capture the magic and charm of handmade festive decor! Just add some tissue paper and tuck them into a lovely box, for welcome homemade gifts.
You can see in the picture below the difference in size for the standard baubles and the supersize larger granny baubles.

Notes (please read carefully)
- Pattern is in US crochet terms
- Chain 3 at beginning of a round counts as 1 dc
- When you’re fitting each half around the Styrofoam ball, expect to stretch the pieces slightly—this is normal and will give a lovely firm fit to your bauble
- If you find the fit a bit tight, simply add another round of single crochet stitches to one or each side to give a little more room.
- The pattern is adaptable and can be easily adjusted, as some worsted weight yarns vary in thickness. For example, I used Stylecraft Aran yarn for one of my baubles. This acrylic yarn had just the right amount of stretch to fit snugly around the Styrofoam insert.
- However, if you’re using a cotton worsted yarn, keep in mind that it doesn’t stretch as much. In that case, adding an extra round of single crochet should give you the perfect fit.

I’m lost and cannot figure out how to receive my free pdf per the blog instructions. I am interested in the giant granny square baubles. I’m currently making 1 each for my children and grandchildren and love them.
Hi. There isn’t a free pdf for this pattern but you can purchase a low cost pdf on Ravelry or Etsy. Or follow the free pattern in the blog post:)
I’m making up this lovely pattern and stuffing them for small squishy balls for a couple of baby great nephews. If the mothers think they’re unsuitable I can simply attach a loop and use them for Christmas tree decorations. They’re not perfectly spherical but good enough for children – or maybe my cat – to play with. I’m using DK cotton and a 3.0 mm hook, and it’s a lovely close result. Also, as they don’t have to be fitted to a pre-existing inner shape, size and tension don’t matter.
