It will be a great way to use up your yarn stash, get some new color ideas and make quick festive projects before the holidays.

My Merry Star Christmas Stocking is the 5th pattern, inspired by the color palette Starry Night. I had such fun looking through my stash of yarn for just the right colors! What would you make with this color palette?

Inspiration for the Crochet Christmas Stocking Pattern

Do you remember the magic of hanging stockings by the fireplace? This year, I wanted to create a crochet stocking that’s just as magical to make as it is to display. I am planning on making one for each of my 5 grandchildren – so there will be five colorful crochet stockings soon!

This week’s blog hop theme is Starry Night – bold, bright, and full of festive sparkle! I wanted to give Christmas a retro twist with unexpected colors that capture that magic. This stocking celebrates that spirit with bold peacock blue and contrast colors of pink, red and mustard. It would also look fab in a traditional holiday palette.

Pattern Details for the Granny Square Christmas Stocking

This crochet Christmas stocking pattern is made entirely of granny squares, with just a little bit of folding and simple finishing touches. Just follow the photo tutorial to lay out and join the squares. To finish off your stocking, add a few rounds of a single crochet edging, a hanging loop and that’s it! You’ll have a beautiful crochet Christmas decoration or a treasured gift.

I recommend blocking your crochet squares before joining them. Blocking does take a little extra time, but it’s well worth it. It helps your squares keep their shape, makes joining easier, and gives your finished piece a more polished finish.

At 17 inches long, this stocking is a perfect size – substantial enough to fill with gifts. Imagine that pop of peacock blue catching the warm glow of your Christmas lights.

Yarn Suggestions for the Crochet Christmas Stocking

I used the following amount of yarn and hooks for my stocking:

  • About 500yds [450m] of a single color of DK weight yarn
  • Small amounts of contrasting colors
  • 4 mm hook

I chose King Cole Luxury Yak DK because the blend of Merino wool and yak creates something truly special – soft, durable, and with a beautiful natural sheen that makes those colors absolutely glow.

Any DK or light worsted weight yarn will work great if you’d like to use what you have in your stash. If you try a different fiber or yarn weight, first whip up a square and measure it to get a better idea of the size and drape of your stocking.
