A Quiet Crochet Project for Busy Seasons

Aora means soft light and glow. With new light each day, small bursts of color, and slow, joyful making, this rectangle shawl captures everything I love about an advent project.

I crocheted this shawl using 24 fingering weight mini skeins from an advent calendar. Each evening in the lead-up to Christmas, I opened a new color and crocheted that portion of the shawl. It became a quiet little ritual in the middle of a busy season.

You can use an advent calendar 24 skein set like I did, or gather your own mini skeins and fingering weight leftovers from your stash.

An Eye-Catching Linen Stitch Crochet Shawl from Mini Skeins

The linen stitch (also known as moss stitch) is perfect for a mini skein crochet shawl pattern. The mix of single crochet and chains creates a textured fabric that really lets the colors and speckles shine.

For this variation, you work two single crochets into each chain-1 space, with a chain-1 between them. It’s an easy two-row repeat, so there’s no overthinking. Just steady stitching and watching the colors build.

I worked each mini skein for 17 rows before changing color. You’ll have a small amount left from each skein, which I used to add fringe along one long edge. It’s optional, but it’s a lovely way to use every last bit of yarn. It also softens the edge and gives boho relaxed vibes!

Details of the Mini Skein Shawl Crochet Pattern

The finished rectangular shawl measures 82 inches (208 cm) long and 18 inches (46 cm) wide, lightly blocked and without fringe. It’s long enough to wrap comfortably around your shoulders or wear as an oversized scarf.

My lovely daughter-in-law kindly modelled the shawl for these photos, and she wears it so effortlessly – the colours and drape really shine!

The pattern is free below on my blog. If you prefer an ad-free version, the low-cost PDF also includes a clear crochet chart to guide you through the stitch pattern.

Yarn Suggestions for the Linen Stitch Shawl

I used the following amount of yarn and hooks for my shawl:

  • 408g of fingering weight yarn mini skeins from Hedgehog Fibres 2025 Advent Calendar
  • 4 mm hook

This crochet shawl was made using a 24-day Advent calendar of fingering-weight mini skeins (about 17g each), but it’s just as well suited to any minis or scraps in your stash. The simple stitch repeat lets the colors shine, with no planning required – just one small section at a time.

Color Notes

  • I changed color every 17 rows working my way through the 24 mini skeins.
  • I still had a small amount of each color left over.and used approx. 17g of each mini skein per section.
  • I worked each day’s mini skein as I opened them in order during Advent, but you could choose 24 colors in any order you wish.

Shawl Instructions

With 1st color, chain 116

Row 1 (RS): 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, * ch1, sk next 2 ch, 2 sc in next ch; rep from * to end, turn.

Row 2: Ch1, skip 2 sc, 2 sc in 1st ch1-sp, * ch 1, skip next 2 sc, 2 sc in next ch1-sp; rep from * across to last st, 1 sc in last st, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in 1st st, * ch 1, skip next 2 sc, 2 sc in next ch1-sp; rep from * across, ch1, sk last 2 sc, 2 sc in t-ch, turn.

Rows 4 – 408: Repeat rows 2 & 3, changing color every 17 rows.

Fringing

Use the leftover yarn from each of your 24 mini skeins to make the fringe along the length of the shawl. After crocheting the shawl, you’ll have a small amount of each color remaining.

  • Make 4 fringes in each color
  • Cut strands 10 inches long from the leftover yarn
  • Each fringe uses 4 strands, folded in half to make 8 strands
  • Attach 4 fringes to every striped section

You will have 24 sections × 4 fringes = 96 fringes in total, spaced evenly along the length of the shawl. Trim fringes evenly.

An optional fringe gives this linen stitch shawl the perfect finishing touch!

Finishing

Weave in all loose ends. Lay project out to finished size and pull gently into shape. Pin in place and spray lightly with water and leave to dry. You can wet block shawl if desired – check your yarn fiber instructions.
