Crochet Boomerang Shawl Mini Skeins – Free Pattern

Have you ever wondered what to crochet with mini skeins of yarn? Sweet Chestnut is a free pattern for a boomerang crochet shawl with a gorgeous drape.

You will need approx. 450m of fingering weight yarn. One beautiful skein of yarn, or a selection of mini skeins from your stash, is all that is needed to show off this light and lacy shawl pattern. An asymmetric shape to curl around your neck and shoulders

Made using basic crochet stitches that combine to create an interesting pattern, that is relaxing and quick to crochet.

Details of Mini Skein Crochet Shawl

I wanted to make a fluid draping shawl that would work up fast, and wished to use a gorgeous selection of 6 mini skeins I had in my stash.

The colours included 3 neutral biscuit shades that faded beautifully together, and I added some of the red yarn (a stunning burnt copper red) as thinner stripes. I ended the flow of colours with a copper brown (flecked with red) and finished off with a broad sweep of the copper red yarn for a dramatic flair!

I has 2 mini skeins of a similar red yarn so I was able to crochet a generous band of colour.

You could use a selection of mini skeins to make this shawl, or a single skein of yarn and one mini (total of 120g of yarn). Have fun trying out your own colour combinations!

I have included a row by row description of the colour sequence for 6 x mini skeins, that you can follow if you wish. You will never wonder again, what to crochet with mini skeins!

This Free pattern is written in US Crochet terms

Notes (read carefully)

• The main body is worked in one piece starting at the narrowest tip, increasing on one side while gently decreasing on the other side
• The shawl can be made larger or smaller by working more or fewer pattern repeats. This will alter the amount of yarn required.
• You can use any Fingering weight yarn to achieve a similar effect
• Includes written instructions and a picture tutorial. Pattern written in US crochet terms
• Gauge is not important. To achieve a light drape tension, I suggest you make a swatch of the first 8 rows and see what hook size works best for you
• Ch 2 does NOT count as a stitch
• Ch 3 counts as 1 dc
• I have included some tips in the first 8 rows to help stitch placement. Once you have the four row pattern repeat established, the shawl will work up quickly!
• Stitch counts (in Itallics) are included at the end of the first 8 rows to help you

Only basic stitches are used in this shawl but some concentration is required until the row increases are established. Stitches included are hdc, hdc2tog and dc.

Materials

Martin’s Lab single-ply/fingering weight/6 x 80yds [6 x 73m]: Super Wash Merino/120gr)

4.0mm crochet hook, or hook size that suits your tension. Swatch the first 8 rows and see what hook size works best for you

You can use 420 – 450m of any fingering weight yarn or yarn weight of your choice and matching hook.

Measurements

Shawl measures 67 in [170cm]  x 48 in [122cm] x 42in [107cm]

Shawl pictured used 6 x 20g of yarn. Each mini skein is approx. 73m. I have included the colour sequence for using a total of 6 colours below. Yarns A, B, C, D, E, F. This a recipe that you can use with your own colour choices if you wish.

Special Stitches

Hdc2tog (decrease): [Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop) 2 times, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook

Instructions for Boomerang Shawl with Mini Skeins

Row 1: Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and beg ch), 4 dc in 4th ch from hook, turn – 5dc

Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st here and throughout), 3 hdc in 1^st st (at base of ch 2), hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog over last 2 sts (next st and top of beg ch 4), turn – 5 hdc, 1 hdc2tog

         

Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout), dc in next st (you will skip st at base of ch), ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, 3 dc in last st, turn – 6 dc

Row 4: Ch 2, 3 hdc in 1^st st (at base of ch 2), hdc in next 2 sts, hdc in next ch-1 sp, hdc in next st, hdc in next ch-1 sp, hdc2tog over last 2 sts (next st and top of beg ch 3), turn – 8 hdc, 1 hdc2tog

Row 5: Ch 3, dc in next st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st; rep from * across until 1 st remains, 3 dc in last st, turn – 8 dc

Row 6: Ch 2, 3 hdc in 1^st st, hdc in next 2 sts, * hdc in next st, hdc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * across until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog over last 2 sts, turn – 11 hdc, 1 hdc2tog

Row 7: Ch 3, * dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st; rep from * across until 1 st remains, 3 dc in last st, turn – 9 dc

Row 8: Ch 2, 3 hdc in 1^st st, hdc in next st, * hdc in next st, hdc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * across until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog over last 2 sts, turn – 14 hdc, 1 hdc2tog

Rows 5 – 8 form the pattern repeat. Continue repeating pattern as instructed. You can use a single yarn and make a shawl without the stripes if you wish. I finished on row 88 but you could continue repeating pattern to make a larger shawl.

Rows 9 – 88: Repeat rows 5 – 8 for pattern, changing colours as detailed in colour sequence. Fasten off yarn.

Finishing

Weave in all loose ends. Soak your shawl in lukewarm water and gently wring in a towel. Lay project out to finished size and pull gently into shape. Pin in place and leave to dry. Add tassels if you wish.

Tassel Instructions

Make 3 tassels as follows:

Using a book approx. 6” in width, cut a 12” length of yarn and lay across top of book – this will be used to tie top of tassel. Wrap yarn around book about 25 times (depending on thickness required). Using the 12” tie, knot top of tassel tightly. Cut tassel at opposite end. Wrap another length of yarn around tassel 1” from top approx. 8 times and knot ends together. Trim if needed and sew securely to 3 corners of shawl.
