Sharing is caring!

This crochet Easter basket is a charming, beginner-friendly project that’s perfect for Easter egg hunts and everyday play. Made with bright, cheerful colors and popular granny squares, it’s a delightful way to add a handmade touch to your Easter celebrations!

My granddaughters love an Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday. This year, I promised them I would crochet special Easter baskets for the occasion. When I asked what they’d like, their answer made me smile: “We want ones like Nana’s blankets!”

I realized they were referring to the colorful granny square blankets and granny square bags scattered throughout my home. Of course! And that’s how this cheerful granny square Easter basket was born.

Why You’ll Love This Easter Basket Crochet Pattern

This cute basket isn’t just for Easter eggs! These mini baskets are versatile and perfect for:

  • Collecting small treasures on nature walks
  • Storing craft supplies
  • Holding small toys
  • Adding to your Easter decorations around the home

This cute granny bag is soft and flexible and easy for little hands to carry. It can even be folded and tucked into a child’s pocket when not in use. If you prefer a sturdier basket, you can easily add some cardboard or felt to line the bottom and sides.

Yarn Details

I used a dk weight cotton yarn from my stash for this project, which gives the basket a nice structure while keeping it lightweight. You can use any weight yarn – a bulky yarn would make a larger basket. I suggest choosing a hook slightly smaller than recommended. That way you will create firmer squares that will help the basket hold its shape.

If you prefer a more sturdy basket, you can easily add some cardboard or felt to line the bottom and sides for extra firmness.

The handles are simple to create – just two crocheted pieces that are sewn onto the basket with matching yarn. This makes them strong enough to hold chocolate eggs, small toys, or whatever treasures your little ones will collect!

Finishing Instructions for Granny Square Basket

Joining:

Arrange 5 granny squares as shown in the image above. Using a contrast color, join the 4 side squares to the bottom square of the basket with a single crochet (sc) seam as follows:

The single crochet seam will be on the outside of the basket

With wrong sides (WS) facing together, insert your hook through both stitches of both squares and work sc stitches evenly around all squares, working 1 sc in each corner ch-2 space. Fasten off.

Fold up the side squares and join all 4 sides with a sc seam. Fasten off.

Top Edging:

Work 1 sc in each stitch and each ch-2 space around the top of the basket. Fasten off.

Handles (Make 2)

Row 1: Chain 34, leaving a long tail for attaching later. Work 1 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and each ch across – 33 sc. Fasten off and weave in all threads.

Attach the handles by sewing each end to a corner of the basket (see image below). Fasten off and weave in all threads.
