Crochet Crab Stitch Details

Instead of working the single crochet stitch from right to left, you will work the stitch from left to right. The opposite of what you normally do.

Confusing? I understand! It takes a bit of practice and soon you will adding crab stitch with ease. The good news is, I have a video for you. There is a written explanation and a video tutorial below.

Note: Instructions in video are given for right handed crocheters

Instructions for the Crochet Crab Stitch Border

If you can make a single crochet crochet, you can make a crab stitch. You will be working the stitch to the RIGHT of your hook.

It is best if you add the crab stitch to a final round of single crochets on your border. I made a small sample of my Scallop Shell Baby Blanket for the purpose of showing you an example. I added 2 rows of single crochet to the border just like I was making a larger blanket.

Crab Stitch Method

  • You will insert your hook in any stitch and ch 1.
  • Insert your hook into the next stitch to the right of your hook, keeping your hook at an angle, and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops.

You will see that it is the same as a standard single crochet but made at a different angle. Find the method that works best for you.

Keep your tension loose as you don’t want to pull your border too tight.

Continue working the stitch around your border evenly, making 1 crab stitch in your corner ch-sps. When you reach the start of the round, insert your hook into the space you started from, finish your stitch and fasten off.

The crab stitch is an easy stitch once you have had a little practice!
