Sharing is caring!

Do you love to crochet granny flower squares as much as I do? This vintage inspired flower crochet blanket combines beautiful textured popcorn stitches with classic garden colors. The result is something truly special! Originally one of my most popular premium patterns, I’m delighted to now share this free crochet blanket pattern with you.

This intermediate pattern works perfectly as a baby blanket with its bright colors and snuggly texture – it would make a wonderful gift for a new arrival. Using any DK weight yarn, the finished blanket measures 34″ x 40″, though you can easily make it larger for a cozy throw.

About This Crochet Blanket

The pattern uses popcorn stitches to create gorgeous textured granny squares with a raised flower center. The popcorn stitches can be tricky at first, but they’re so worth it for that beautiful dimensional flower popping out of each square!

I have included an easy joining technique but you could also sew the squares together if you prefer. You will then add a simple crochet border for the finishing touch.

Blocking tip: I recommend blocking each square before joining them together. Pin each square on a blocking mat and spray lightly with water (or hover a steam iron over the square), then leave to dry. This creates beautifully even squares that join together perfectly.

Crochet Blanket Measurements

  • The finished blanket has 30 squares and measures approximately 34″ x 40″.
  • You will need 80 squares for a larger blanket measuring approximately 52″ x 64″.
  • For the larger version, you’ll need about 6 balls of your main color and 2 balls of each contrast color.

Suggested Yarn and Colors

This blanket works great with any DK weight (light worsted weight) yarn, making it perfect for scrap busting. You can also use a different yarn weight to create a smaller or larger blanket – just use the appropriate hook size and remember that yardage requirements will vary.

Here are the yarn and colors for both versions I created, including substitution colors for the second blanket. For a boho inspired look, try scrap yarn bright colors with a dramatic black border – perfect for stash yarn and absolutely stunning!

Version 1 – Stylecraft Special DK

  • Main Color (MC) – 2 balls of Cream
  • Contrast Colors (CC) – 1 ball each of Lipstick, Pomegranate, Pale Rose, Mustard, Buttermilk and Meadow

Version 2 – Made with Nako Calico DK

Finishing

  • Layout squares in rows of 5 x 6.
  • Seams are worked by holding 2 squares with wrong sides together and inserting the hook through both loops of each square to work the sts. (It may be helpful to use stitch holders to connect the un-worked sides and edges of the squares so the strips of squares will hold together until all seams are completed.)

Joining Squares

You will join each row to the one below as follows:

  • Using MC, take the first square of Row 1 and first square of Row 2, and holding WS together, insert hook through both ch-2 corner sps. [Ch 1, 1 sc, ch 1] in ch-2 corner sp, (working in both loops of each square) 1 sc in next st, (first of 19 dc of previous row) * ch 1, miss 1 st, 1 sc in next st; rep from * to last st, ch 1, 1 sc in ch-2 sp.
  • Without breaking yarn, continue joining pairs of squares in this way, until you have a strip of 2 rows with 5 squares in each. Fasten off yarn.
  • Join the third and following rows in the same way until you have 6 strips with 5 squares in each. Fasten off yarn.
  • Join the vertical Motifs in the same way as the Horizontal Seams, crocheting over the tops of the Horizontal Seams. Fasten off and weave in threads.

Border

Using MC and with RS facing, join in any corner ch-2 sp.

Round 1: Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc, ch 2), 1 dc in same sp, dc in next 19 sts, * 1 dc in ch-1 sp, 1 dc in seam between 2 squares, 1 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 19 sts; rep from * across to next corner, ** [1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc] in corner ch-2 sp.
