Yarn for a Rectangular Shawl

I used King Cole Curiosity, a DK weight yarn and a 4.5 mm crochet hook. The pattern will use approx 800m – 1000m of yarn and used a total of 2 yarn cakes.

I used 1 cake of the same yarn to make this pretty crochet shawlette.

The color changes make it easy to achieve the beautiful gradient effect.

If you don’t have access to King Cole Curiosity, Lionbrand Mandala yarn cakes would be a great substitute.

Tips for Making the Easy Rectangular Crochet Shawl

I would consider this design an easy crochet pattern but it has a long foundation row which can be a bit daunting! Placing stitch markers every 50 chains can be very helpful to keep stitch count when making the starting chain.

One of the best things about this pattern is that you can customize it to your liking. You can choose a solid color or a variegated yarn, or even mix and match different colors.

The possibilities are endless, and you can make this shawl truly your own. Whether you’re an experienced crocheter or a beginner, this is the perfect shawl for your next easy project!

Rectangle Crochet Shawls

Rectangular shawls in my opinion, are the perfect accessory and can be worn in so many ways.

Drape one over your shoulders and use as a cozy wrap to keep warm on chilly days, or wrap one around your neck to wear as a scarf to add a pop of color and an extra layer to an outfit.

The rectangular shape also makes them easy to crochet, and is a great pattern for beginners.

There is no shaping to make and once you have the first few repeats made, it is the perfect project for relaxing crochet!

Whether you prefer a cozy pocket shawl in worsted weight yarn or in a lightweight yarn for warmer weather, rectangular shawls are a timeless addition to any wardrobe.

What Size is a Crochet Rectangle Shawl?

The size for a crochet rectangle wrap is usually around 60 to 70 inches in length and 18 to 20 inches in width, but this can vary depending on the design and your personal preference.

I love a wrap to be big and cozy like a blanket! But I also love a lightweight shawl in a rectangular shape that I can wear as a cozy scarf.

Like this lacy rectangle shawl in a lighter weight yarn. I wear this as a scarf nearly every day.

Tassel Instructions

Make tassels as follows:

Using a book approx. 4-5” in width, cut a 12” length of yarn and lay across top of book – this will be used to tie top of tassel. Wrap yarn around book about 15-20 times (depending on thickness required).

Using the 12” tie, knot top of tassel tightly. Cut tassel at opposite end. Wrap another length of yarn around tassel 1” from top approx.5 times and knot ends together.

Trim if needed and sew securely to corners of shawl.

  1. Is there a missing word or punctuation in the dc2tog description? I think I know how to do one, but not sure from that description.

    1. Hi Denise. The instructions are correct. If you repeat what is in the ( ) twice and then yarn over and pull through all 3 loops, you should have your stitch completed:)
