Looking for a crochet pencil case pattern that’s fun and practical? This free pattern is perfect for keeping your essentials organized! Use it to store pens, pencils, or even crochet hooks, and it also makes a fab makeup bag.
The design uses rows of contrast colors and a simple spike stitch for added texture. Made with sturdy 4-ply cotton yarn, this case is durable enough for daily use. Plus, it’s a quick make—you can complete it in just a few hours.
You can find the free written instuctions and a crochet chart below.

Yarn and Materials Needed
I used Baby Pure Cotton from Anchor Crafts, a durable 4-ply cotton yarn that creates a sturdy finish. Cotton yarn is ideal for this pencil case as it works well with the tight single crochet (sc) stitches, ensuring the case holds its shape and withstands daily use.
If you prefer, you can substitute with Scheepjes Catona or Hobbii Cotton 8/4, both excellent alternatives. You can use any small amounts of cotton you might have left over from projects.
You’ll also need a crochet hook suitable for your chosen yarn (typically 2.5mm-3mm for 4-ply cotton) and a zipper that matches the width of your finished case. Adding a fabric lining is optional but can provide extra sturdiness and a professional touch.

What Size for a Crochet Pencil Case
The crochet pencil case measures 8.5 x 4.25in [22 x 11cm] and is large enough to hold all the pens and those little extras.
The pencil case is crocheted in two pieces, which are sewn together on three sides before you add your zipper. The HDC spike stitch gives the case a textured, modern look, making it perfect for school, work, or as a small pouch for your crochet tools.
