Details of the Crochet Flower Afghan Pattern

This Free Crochet Blanket Pattern is for a decorative item in your home. I can imagine using it draped on a nursery chair or on a baby’s cot. A larger version would make a unique pattern for a lap blanket or as an afghan throw or bedspread!

If you prefer a more tighter square, you may enjoy this Daisy Granny crochet blanket.

This beautiful pattern is very versatile in that it can be worked using any yarn weight – from thinner yarns like a light DK to worsted weight yarns. Check the yarn label for matching hook size.

I choose to use a slip stitch joining method for my squares but you could easily sew them together if you prefer.

You will then add a simple border. I suggest you use a smaller crochet hook if your edging is not lying flat.

Crochet Flower Square Details

The lace crochet square starts with a crochet flower, and you will then square your flower with 2 more rounds of your main color.

You can choose to make as many or few squares as you like, making baby blankets or larger afghans perfect for the colder months.

Crochet squares are portable, easy to carry around and soon build up to a nice pile ready to join!

You could also choose this pretty flower crochet square as an alternative square design for a blanket.

Yarn Details for a Crochet Baby Blanket

This crochet flower blanket is made using a light DK weight cotton yarn – approximately 600m in total for a small baby blanket. Choose about 300m of a main colour and 300m of contrast colours for the centre of the flower squares and border. I wanted to use natural fibers for this crochet project but acrylic yarn or a cotton/acrylic mix is also perfect.

If you choose thicker worsted weight yarn, you need to plan for using more yarn. The blanket is a great stashbuster project!

Do You Need to Block a Crochet Blanket?

I like to block each square before I attach them. You can use a blocking board like in the picture below but you certainly don’t need one! You can use the top of an ironing board or a blocking mat. Pin each motif to an even shape and spray with water (or hover a steam iron over each piece) and leave to dry. It will make attaching them later much easier.

I also like to block the finished blanket to relax the stitches and to even out the final shape.

Notes for Joining Blanket Squares

  • You can use a yarn needle to sew squares together if preferred.
  • Layout squares in rows of 4 x 5 squares. Refer to image of the complete blanket as a guideline and for color placement if you wish
  • It may be helpful to use stitch holders to connect the unworked sides and edges of the squares so the strips of squares will hold together until all seams are completed.
  • Seams are worked by holding 2 squares with Right Sides together and inserting the hook through back loops only of each square and making a sl st join. If your join appears to be pulling tight, use a larger hook for seaming.
  • The joining of the squares is done in continuous rows, square by square until an entire row is finished. You will only cut your yarn when you reach the end of a row. First, join all the horizontal rows of the blanket and then join the vertical rows.

Joining Squares

You will join each row to the one below as follows:

Horizontal Join – Using MC, take the first square of row 1 and the first square of row 2, and holding RS together, place hook in both ch-3 corner spaces. Ch1, 2 sc in ch-3 corner space of both squares, sl st (loosely) in back loop only in each st of both squares, across to next ch-3 sp, 2 sc in ch-3 sp (both squares), * pick up your next 2 squares, 2 sc in next ch-3 sp (both squares), sl st in back loop only in each st of both squares across, 2 sc in next ch-3 sp; repeat from * across row, making 2 sc in final ch-3 sp. Fasten off.

Join the third and following rows in the same way until you have 5 strips with 4 squares in each. Fasten off yarn.

Vertical Join – Turn partially joined blanket and work the un-joined squares in the same way as the Horizontal Seams, crocheting over the tops of the Horizontal Seams. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Border

Work border rounds with right side facing throughout. Use a smaller hook if needed (see notes)

Join MC in any st

Round 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), make 1 sc in each st around, making 2 sc in each ch-3 sp (where the squares meet) and [2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc] in each corner ch-3 sp. Fasten off.

Round 2: Using one of the CC colors, sl st into a corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, [1hdc, ch 2, 1 hdc] in ch-2 sp (corner made). Working in BLO make 1 hdc in each st around, working [1 hdc, ch 2, 1 hdc] in each corner ch-2 sp. Join with a sl st to beg hdc, fasten off

Round 3: Using next CC rep round 2.

Round 4: Using next CC rep round 2. Fasten off and weave in all threads.

Finishing

I recommend a light blocking to add a polished and even finish to your blanket. Pin in place on blocking mats and spray with water. Or gently steam with a hot iron. Leave to dry.

  1. This is a very beautiful blanket! It is so delicate looking and your colour choices are excellent. Your patterns are always clear and easy to follow. The fact that it is made up of squares makes it easier to work on and carry to places where you may have to wait. (appointments, airports etc). I think that I will make it in worsted weight yarn because we have more colder days than hot here in northern BC.
I do appreciate your kindness in sharing this pattern. Thank you.

    1. Thank you so much Trish! The pattern would work really well in a worsted weight yarn!
