Details for this Beginner Crochet Shawl
It is a beginner friendly asymmetric shawl pattern using basic stitches, and an easy to memorize repeat pattern.
Pick your favourite yarn in light worsted/DK or fingering weight/4 ply yarn for this flexible pattern, and create your own cosy shawl with a beautiful drape. Add a picot edging for the finishing touch!
The pattern includes a simple crochet chart to help you.

Materials
King Cole Sprite DK (328yds [300m]; 100% acrylic/100gr) 1904 Crete x 2 balls
4.5mm crochet hook
You can use 500m – 800m of any DK yarn or yarn weight of your choice and matching hook.
Pattern testers used fingering weight and DK weight with beautiful results

Notes
- Pattern is in US crochet terms
- Shawl starts at one end. Working in rows, increasing by 2 sts each row, on one side only, until desired size is reached.
- Shawl will benefit from blocking lightly
- Ch 3 at beginning of a row counts as 1dc throughout
- Gauge is not important. To achieve a light drape tension, I suggest you use a hook one size larger than recommended for the yarn you have chosen. Make a swatch of the first 8 rows to test your hook size.
- Shawl pictured used the same yarn for the border but a contrast yarn would also look beautiful.

Instructions for Triangle Crochet Shawl
Using 4.5mm hook (or suitable size for your yarn), make a magic ring.
(or ch 4, 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, turn)
Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in MR, turn– 3 dc
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout pattern), (skip st at base of beg ch 3), 1 dc in next st, ch 2, 1 tr in top of t-ch (beg ch 3), turn – 2 dc, 1 tr
Row 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in 1st st (tr from previous row), ch 2, skip 2 ch, 1 dc in next st, 1 dc in t-ch, turn – 5dc
Row 4: Ch 3, (skip st at base of beg ch 3), 1 dc in next st, ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next 2 sts, ch 2, 1 tr in top of t-ch, turn – 4 dc, 1 tr
Row 5: Ch 3, 2 dc in 1st st (tr from previous row), ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next 2 sts, ch 2, skip 2ch, 1 dc in next st, 1 dc in t-ch, turn – 7 dc
Row 6: Ch 3, (skip st at base of beg ch 3), 1 dc in next st, ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next 2 sts, ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next 2 sts, ch 2, 1 tr in top of t-ch, turn – 6 dc, 1 tr
Row 7: Ch 3, 2 dc in 1st st (tr from previous row), * ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next 2 sts; rep from * to ; across, making last dc in t-ch, turn
Row 8: Ch 3, (skip st at base of beg ch 3), 1 dc in next st, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next 2 sts; rep from * to ; across, ch 2, 1 tr in top of t-ch, turn.
Rows 7 & 8 form pattern repeat. Continue in pattern repeat for a total of 90 rows, or until reaching size you require. Do not break yarn and continue to border.
Border
Round 1 : Working down long side of shawl (increase side) ch 1, 1 sc in same sp, *ch 6, sl st back into 4th ch from hook (picot made), ch 2, skip end post of next row, 1 sc into st at end of next row; rep from * to next point,
Note : You are making a sc into the end of every 2nd row
1 sc into next point of triangle, ch 6, sl st back into 4th ch from hook, ch 2, 1 sc in same space.
Working up 2nd side of shawl (straight side), *ch 6, sl st back into 4th ch from hook (picot made), ch 2, skip end post of next row, 1 sc into st at end of next row; rep from * to next point, 1 sc into point of triangle, ch 6, sl st back into 4th ch from hook, ch 2, 1 sc in same space.
Working across top of shawl, *ch 6, sl st back into 4th ch from hook (picot made), ch 2, s1 c in next ch-2 sp; rep from * across, sl st in beg sc. Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.
Tassel Instructions
Make 3 tassels as follows:
Using a book approx. 6-8” in width, cut a 12” length of yarn and lay across top of book – this will be used to tie top of tassel. Wrap yarn around book about 15-20 times (depending on thickness required). Using the 12” tie, knot top of tassel tightly. Cut tassel at opposite end. Wrap another length of yarn around tassel 1” from top approx. 5 times and knot ends together. Trim if needed and sew securely to 3 corners of shawl.
