Jade and Roses is an asymmetrical crochet shawl pattern that creates a contemporary accessory you can wear all year round. Pattern Details for the Asymmetrical Crochet Shawl

It is no secret that I love using Puff Stitches in my designs. This shawl has a row of puff stitches every 8 rows, and I used a ‘normal’ puff stitch with a slight modification. You make an extra yarn over to give a slight height increase, and it is explained in Special Stitches in the pattern. Practise it a few times and it will soon be very easy!

Best Yarn for this Asymmetrical Crochet Shawl Pattern

I used the following amount of yarn and hook for my shawl:

• Sports weight yarn – approx. 800g of 700m of the main colour and 100m of a contrast colour
• 5mm hook

I purchased the beautiful yarn I used for this shawl from Stolen Stitches in Cork, Ireland. It is a sports weight yarn, a favourite of mine. Light enough to create a lovely drape, and sturdy enough to work up quickly! The yarn is Nua sport a luxury silky yarn which was a pleasure to use and the stitch definition is amazing!

This asymmetrical triangle crochet shawl pattern is adjustable. You can use any yarn weight and hook and adjust the pattern repeat to give the shawl size you wish.

Free Crochet Pattern for the Jade and Roses Shawl

Jade and Roses is a beautiful asymmetrical crochet shawl featuring an open lace pattern and rows of textured puff stitches. Made with basic crochet stitches, this relaxing design is a stylish, wearable accessory that can be enjoyed year round.

Intermediate
Only basic stitches are used in this shawl but some concentration is required until the row increases are established.

Materials

• Nua by Stolen Stitches – Sports Weight (153yds [140m]: 60% Merino Wool, 20% Yak, 20% Linen/50gr)
  • Main Colour (MC): 5 skeins Hatters Tea Party 9803
  • Contrast Colour (CC): 1 skein Café Flamingo 9812
• 5 mm crochet hook 

You can use 800m – 900m of any sports weight yarn or yarn weight of your choice and matching hook. Be mindful your yarn amounts may vary.

Notes

• In US crochet terms
• Shawl starts at one end.
• Working in rows, increasing by 2 sts every second row, on one side only, until desired size is reached.
• Pattern is an 8-row repeat
• On straight side, ch2 does not count as a st
• Gauge is not important. To achieve a light drape tension, I suggest you use a hook one size larger than recommended for the yarn you have chosen. Make a swatch of the first 8 rows to test your hook size.
• A Crochet chart for the first 22 rows is included further down the page

Using MC ch4

Row 1: 2dc in 4^th ch from hook, turn – 3dc

Row 2: Ch1, 1sc in first st, 1sc in next st, 1sc in top of t-ch, turn – 3sc

Row 3: Ch2 (does not count as a stitch here and throughout), 1dc in 1^st st, 1dc in next st, 3dc in last st, turn – 5dc

Row 4: Ch1, 1sc in first st, 1sc in next 4 sts, turn – 5sc

Row 5: Ch2, 1dc in 1^st st, 1dc in next 3 sts, 3dc in last st, turn – 7dc

Row 6: Ch1, 1sc in first st, 1sc in each st across, turn – 7sc

Row 7: Ch2, 1dc in first st, ch1, miss 1 st, * 1dc in next st, ch1, miss 1 st; rep from * across, making [1dc, ch1, 1dc] in last st, turn – 5dc, 4 ch-1 sp

Row 8: Ch1, 1sc in first st, 1sc in each st and ch-1 sp across, turn – 9sc

Row 9: Ch2, 1dc in first st, 1dc in each st across, 3dc in last st, turn – 11dc

Row 10: Ch1, 1sc in first st, 1sc in each st across, turn – 11sc

Row 11: Ch2, 1dc in first st, ch1, miss 1 st, * 1dc in next st, ch1, miss 1 st; rep from * across, making [1dc, ch1, 1dc] in last st, turn – 7dc, 6 ch-1 sp

Row 12: Ch1, 1sc in first st, 1sc in each st and ch-1 sp across, turn – 13sc

Row 13: Ch2, 1dc in first st, * ch1, miss 1 st, PS (see special stitches) in next st; rep from * to last 2 sts, ch1, miss 1 st, [1dc, ch1, 1dc] in last st, turn – 5PS, 3dc, 7 ch-1 sp

Row 14: Ch1, 1sc in first st, 1sc in each st, ch-1 sp, and PS across, making 1sc in last st, turn – 15sc

Continue in pattern as follows

Row 15: Ch2, 1dc in first st, ch1, miss 1 st, * 1dc in next st, ch1, miss 1 st; rep from * across, making [1dc, ch1, 1dc] in last st, turn – 9dc, 8 ch-1 sp

Row 16: Ch1, 1sc in first st, 1sc in each st and ch-1 sp across, turn – 17sc

Row 17: Ch2, 1dc in first st, 1dc in each st across, 3dc in last st, turn – 19dc

Row 18: Ch1, 1sc in first st, 1sc in each st across, turn – 19sc

Row 19: Ch2, 1dc in first st, ch1, miss 1 st, * 1dc in next st, ch1, miss 1 st; rep from * across, making [1dc, ch1, 1dc] in last st, turn – 11dc, 10 ch-1 sp

Row 20: Ch1, 1sc in first st, 1sc in each st and ch-1 sp across, fasten off yarn, turn – 21sc

Row 21: Using contrast colour, ch2, 1dc in first st, * ch1, miss 1 st, PS in next st; rep from * to last 2 sts, ch1, miss 1 st, [1dc, ch1, 1dc] in last st, fasten off yarn, turn – 9PS, 3dc, 11 ch-1 sp

Row 22: Using MC, ch1, 1sc in first st, 1sc in each st, ch-1 sp, and PS across, making 1sc in last st, turn – 23sc

Rows 23 – 134: Repeat rows 15 – 22 – 135 sc

Note: Shawl pictured changed to contrast colour for every second puff stitch row but you may wish to use it on every puff stitch row (rows 13 and 21)

Rows 135 – 140: Repeat rows 15 – 20. Fasten off MC – 141 sc

Row 141: (final row edging) Using contrast yarn, join in 1^st st.  Ch3, sl st into 3^rd ch from hook, skip 1 st, sc in next 3 sts, * ch3, sl st into 3^rd ch from hook, skip 1 st, sc in next 3 sts; rep from * across, ending with ch3, sl st into 3^rd ch from hook. Fasten off yarn.

Finishing

Weave in all loose ends. Lay project out to finished size and pull gently into shape. Pin in place and spray lightly with water and leave to dry. You can wet block shawl if desired – check your yarn fiber instructions. Add tassels if you wish.
