Inspiration for the Granny Jewel Square

This textured granny square was inspired by my love of turning scrap yarn into something beautiful. Each round features a different textured crochet stitch and a new color, creating plenty of opportunities to play with both color and texture.

I think this design would make a lovely stash-busting blanket made entirely from these flower granny squares. Simply work up a square here and there using leftover yarn, and before long you’ll have a whole pile of squares ready to be joined into a beautiful blanket.

Yarn Suggestions for the Granny Jewel Square

I used small amounts of Stylecraft Special Aran for my squares. This medium (#4) weight acrylic yarn is an economical choice that’s easy to care for and available in a wide range of colors.

One of my favorite things about this textured granny square is how little yarn each round requires. The first few rounds use just 1–3 yards each, making it a wonderful way to put even the tiniest scraps to good use.

Have fun exploring your stash and experimenting with different color combinations! Just be sure to choose yarns with similar fiber content and care requirements so your finished project can be washed and cared for with ease.

Finishing

Weave in all threads. I recommend blocking your square to even out your stitches and give a nice, polished finish. Pin out to measurements, spray with water and leave to dry.
Or use a steamer or steam setting on your iron. Hold steam about an inch above the fabric. Let it cool completely before unpinning.
