Crochet Cowl Pattern using Mini Skeins
I’m always looking for crochet projects that work with mini skeins of yarn. For this cowl, I used 7 colors from an Advent Calendar (leaving me with lots more mini skeins to play with for a future project).
This crochet cowl pattern is one of my favorites. The feather and lace stitch pattern creates such a beautiful texture that you’ll feel proud making and wearing it. There are no complicated color changes – you simply swap colors every two rows. Yes, there are a few ends to weave in but it is worth it.

Crochet Cowl Pattern Details
This crochet cowl is made in one long strip using a chevron stitch pattern. The 2-row repeat is straightforward to follow, and because the edges line up so neatly, joining the two ends together is easy using a simple slip stitch join. Change color every two rows and repeat the sequence five times for a total of 70 rows.
The finished cowl measures approximately 31 inches (79 cm) around the circumference and 15 inches (38 cm) wide – easily adjustable if you’d prefer it narrower or wider. This crochet cowl is completely reversible, so either side looks beautiful facing out.

Yarn Suggestions for the Crochet Cowl Pattern
I used the following amount of yarn and hooks for my cowl:
- Approx. 140g fingering weight yarn (7 x 20g mini skeins)
- 3.5 mm hook
The beautiful hand-dyed colors you see here are part of the Irish Artisan Yarn 2024 Advent Calendar, a mini skein set in a luxurious merino/yak/nylon blend. The result is a beautiful rainbow effect, especially if you use colors in a gradient. But any 7 colors will work wonderfully! Select colors that bring you joy and use up those mini skeins – or any small amounts of sock or fingering weight yarn.

Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch across, turn – 76 sc
Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as 1 treble here and throughout), 4 tr in 1st st, 1 tr in next st, [skip next st, 1 tr in next st] 8 times, 5 tr in next st, * 5 tr in next st, 1 tr in next st, [skip next st, 1 tr in next st] 8 times, 5 tr in next st; rep from * 2 more times. Fasten of Yarn A, turn – 76 tr
Row 3: With next color, ch 1 (does not count as a st), 1 sc in each st across, turn – 76 sc
Rows 4 – 70: Repeat Rows 2 & 3 for pattern ending with a row 2.
I made a total of 70 rows for my cowl.
Joining Both Ends
- Fold the foundation row and the final row so the two ends meet. I like to pin the 2 ends together in a few places.
- You will be joining with a sl st in the inner loop of each stitch across.
- Using a matching yarn color and working from right to left, insert your hook in the first st of each end.
- Sl st into each st across working through both stitches from each side.
- Fasten off and weave in ends.
Finishing
Weave in all loose ends. Lay project out to finished size and pull gently into shape. Pin in place and spray lightly with water and leave to dry. You can wet block cowl if desired – check your yarn fiber instructions.

These colours are stunning! I will start looking for alternative yarns as I am allergic to wool. Love this pattern!
Thank you! A lightweight acrylic (or cotton/acrylic) yarn would work great!
Hi, I love this cowl, you wouldn’t have a graph of it that you can share? My sample doesn’t look like this.
Hi! The paid PDF has a stitch chart.
Hi there, do you perhaps have an instructural video of this cowl?
Hi! I don’t have a video but the pdf has a helpful crochet chart
Im having trouble maintaining the count for the rows. I lose stitches every row. Is there a sk st on both top and bottom when working the eight bars between the grouping sets? Please help.
Hi! I am not very sure of your question and what you mean by the top and bottom. Can you email me at carmen@anniedesigncrochet.com and I can help you:)
Thanks for this pattern. I tried row 2, but it is not clear for me.
I repeated from * instead of [. Will attempt it again after looking at finished cowl.
Also, is the picture of the flattened, finished cowl upside down?
Would be grateful for advice Carmen.
Hi Sandy. Yes, the picture is of the cowl upside down. Row 2 can be tricky until you get a few repeats underway. Can you read a crochet chart? The PDF contains one and it does help with stitch placement. Email me at: carmen@anniedesigncrochet.com if I can be of any help:)
