Granny Spike Stitch Crochet Blanket – Free Pattern

Use the Granny Spike Crochet Stitch to create this bright and colourful crochet blanket! The Free crochet pattern is an easy 2-row repeat that creates a blanket full of squishiness and texture.

The Granny Spike Stitch is one of the most popular crochet stitch tutorials on my blog and I wanted to make another blanket to share with you (and the easy crochet stitch is addictive!)

I made a large cot size blanket but you could easily use this pattern as a recipe, to make any size you like.

The yarn I used is no longer available. Stylecraft Special Aran would be a good substitute.

You can use any Aran Weight/Worsted Weight yarn to make this blanket – approx 1200m. You can also use a different yarn weight to make a smaller or larger blanket, using a matching hook but keep in mind your yardage requirements will vary.

Read on for Instructions and all the details to make this colourful blanket. It was crocheted with an Aran Weight yarn –Deramore Studio Aran. I have included the details of the yarn and colours I used.

Materials

Deramores Studio Aran : 100% Anti-Pilling Acrylic; 100g/165m

• 2 balls of Poppy (70606)
• I ball each of Punch (70603), Marigold (70636), Cinnamon (70621), Fern (70638), Jasmin (70601)
• 6 mm and 5 mm hook
• Yarn Needle

Notes

• You can use any Aran Weight/Worsted Weight yarn to make this blanket – approx 1200m. You can also use a different yarn weight to make a smaller or larger blanket, using a matching hook but keep in mind your yardage requirements will vary.
• I use a larger than recommended crochet hook to give a looser drape and more texture
• Instructions are given to make the blanket pictured in this pattern. You can make a smaller or larger blanket by chaining a shorter or longer foundation chain. Stitch Multiple is 4 ch (+1)
• Gauge is not essential for this project

Colour Sequence

• Rows 1 & 2 – Poppy
• Rows 3 & 4 – Punch
• Rows 5 & 6 – Marigold
• Rows 7 & 8 – Cinnamon
• Rows 9 & 10 – Fern
• Rows 11 & 12 – Jasmin

Repeat rows 1-12 for colour sequence

Special Stitches

Spike Stitch  

• Row 2 – Work long dc (make your stitch loose) into the middle chain from the foundation chain below
• Row 3 and all rows – Work long dc into the middle stitch from 2 rows below

Main Blanket

 Using 6mm hook, chain 85 (or however many chains you wish – see notes)

Row 1: Using 1^st colour (see colour sequence), work 3dc in the 5^th ch from the hook, ch1, * skip 3chs, 3dc in next ch, ch1; rep from * across until last 4ch, skip 3ch, 2dc in last ch, turn.

Row 2: Ch2, * [1dc, 1spike st, 1dc] (see special stitches) into next ch-1 sp, ch1; rep from * across, 2dc in beg ch-sp, turn. Fasten off yarn

Row 3: Using 2nd colour, ch2, * [1dc, 1spike st, 1dc] (see special stitches) into next ch-1 sp, ch1; rep from * across, 2dc in beg ch2, turn.

Rows 4 – 85: Repeat Row 3 for pattern following colour sequence above

Row 86: (final row) Ch2, * [1sc, 1spike st, 1sc] into next ch-1 sp, ch1; rep from * across, 2sc in beg ch-sp. Fasten off yarn

Border

Round 1: Using Poppy and 5mm hook, sc evenly around 4 sides of blanket, working (1sc, ch2, 1sc) in each corner.

Tip – On the 2 long sides, I worked 1sc in each ch-2 row end and 2sc in each dc row end. Experiment and see what works for your tension. See picture on page 4

Round 2: Ch3 (counts as 1dc), dc in each st around, working 3dc in each corner ch-2 sp, join with a sl st to beg ch-3.

Round 3: Repeat round 2. Fasten off yarn.

Round 4: Using Jasmin, work crab stitch (reverse sc) in each st around edge of blanket. Fasten off yarn and weave in all threads
