Vintage Crochet Hearts

You can join the crochet hearts and the crochet flowers to make a pretty garland for Valentine’s Day, or what ever occasion takes your fancy! Here are two samples I made, both using different colour combinations.

This one uses my favourite retro colours

And I used a more softer vintage colour palette for this selection

Materials

  • Scraps of Cotton Yarn in sportsweight
  • I love to use these gorgeous little balls of Scheepjes Catona 25g –  they also come in even smaller balls 10g in 100 shades. I use this yarn to make my crochet flowers, and also use it to make all my Christmas Baubles. It is crisp and has great stitch definition….and all the colours to choose from!
  • 3mm crochet hook
  • You can also use a DK weight cotton yarn and a 3.5mm crochet hook.
  • Yarn needle to sew in threads

Finishing and Joining to make a Garland

Block your crochet hearts and flowers by steaming gently with an iron. It makes a big difference when they are nice and flat and ready to join.

Using any yarn colour to join motifs, ch 10, sl st into first ch to form a hanging loop, ch 10. Holding first crochet heart with RS in front, * make 1 sl st in the right hand side of your heart, ch 6, make 1 sl st in the left hand side of your heart, ch 10; taking next heart (or use one of the flowers but sl st into 2 petals instead), repeat from * until all motifs are attached. Ch 20, sl st back into 10th ch from hook to form 2nd hanging loop, and fasten off threads. The picture below will help instructions, if you need it.
