Sharing is caring!

I have started 2 new Crochet Scrap Busting blankets! They will be cot size blankets for two precious twin baby girls and will be perfect for Summer. I sorted out my most colourful cotton yarn and choose a selection of colours that were bright and cheerful and brought me joy. They will be my mindful crochet projects that I will take my time with, over the next few months.

If you would like to join in, I am including a basic pattern for one of the blankets below (the other pattern will be in a separate post soon) and when the blanket is completed, I will have the full pattern details for you then.

I have a vision of a retro colourful blanket with a large plain border that will be cherished for years. You could also use this easy pattern to make a Temperature Blanket – which is very popular this year. Gather your stash and join in!

For my 2 scrap busting blankets. I choose 2 designs. The stripe version is an easy 1-row pattern with some texture. It will be a slow relaxing project, changing colour every row. The second design will consist of squares – a flower centre squared off which gives loads of potential for colour play!

It is a pretty design which is fast to make and I will add the pattern for the square in another post. Here are my squares so far. I have been making a few every evening. And adding a few rows to my stripe blanket.

You can make your stripe blanket any size you wish. I choose to make cot size blankets with a sports-weight cotton yarn but the pattern is flexible so make the size you want! You can easily adjust the width by crocheting a starting chain to the size you require. You can pick back later any chains unused.

I have a stash of cotton yarn including Scheepjes Catona and Yarn and Colors Must Have, that I have collected the last few years. I love to use this yarn for my Christmas Baubles and Crochet Decorations and have a large colour selection which makes me very happy!

Because these blankets are planned for Summer use, the cotton yarn will be perfect. I choose my favourite ‘warm’ colours and some ‘cool’ colours to use in both blankets. I have just noticed that I did not choose any purple shades! Have fun using up yarn from your stash, just make sure it is similar in weight.

Materials

  • Scheepjes Catana or Yarn and Colors Must have (or any similar sport weight cotton yarn) in various shades
  • You can use any weight yarn you have in your stash and a matching hook. Just make sure the yarn is all a similar weight
  • 4mm Crochet Hook

Size

Size is flexible. My blanket will be approx. 30in [76cm] wide, not including a border. I will be adding a large border when the main body is complete

Abbreviations (US crochet terms)

yo – yarn over

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

st – stitch

Notes

  • To change colors seamlessly at the end of the row, complete the final yarn over of the last dc of the row, with the new colour.
  • Always make a starting chain a bit longer than needed – you can always pick back your extra chains later
  • I recommend weaving in threads as you go!

Instructions for Striped Stash Buster Blanket (US Crochet Terms)

Make a long chain to the width you want your blanket with an even number of chains. The following are instructions for the blanket I am making.

Chain 120

Row 1: 1 dc into 2nd ch from hook. * 1 sc in next ch, 1 dc in next ch; rep from * across, making last dc in final ch. Fasten off yarn, turn.

Row 2: Using next colour, ch 1 (counts as 1st st here and throughout), skip 1st st at base of ch 1, * 1 dc in next st (sc from previous row), 1 sc in next st (dc from previous row); rep from * across, ending with 1 dc in last st (beg ch 1). Fasten off yarn, turn.

That is it! Just repeat row 2 changing colour every row. I am so pleased how my blanket is looking so far. I love the cheerful stripes and the lovely texture that the pattern is making. I will share the completed blanket when it is finished with all the details for the border. And the pattern for the sweet little Flower Squares will be posted soon. 1. Hi Sharon! I am so sorry for delay in finishing this project…..I think I took on more than I realised using such a lightweight yarn. I love the result but it is slow going. I hope to finish early April. And thank you x

    1. I am actually working on it this month! That design got pushed back but is nearly ready so keep an eye out. And thank you!
