Caron Cake – One Skein Crochet Scarf – Free Pattern

An easy One Skein Crochet Scarf Pattern that is fast to make, and would be perfect for that last-minute gift!

This Caron Cake scarf pattern is perfect for both beginners and experienced crocheters.

The pointed ends make this piece very wearable, and the addition of popcorn stitches adds visual interest to this statement piece!

One Skein Crochet Scarf Details

It is an easy but interesting pattern to make, and you will have one crocheted in no time. The pattern uses approx 350m of any worsted weight yarn.

The stitches include double crochet rows and filet rows, with popcorn stitches added every 2nd row along one edge.

I added tassels to my scarf (I love tassels!) but it would also look stylish and cozy without them.

Caron Cake One Skein Pattern

I used a single Caron Cake and choose the colour ‘Strawberry Kiwi’ from my stash, and I love the bright cheerful shades in the yarn. And I really love the fact that there are only 2 ends to weave in when finished!

The Caron Cake yarn is perfect for this type of project because it has long color runs that create a gradient effect, making each scarf one-of-a-kind. Additionally, the yarn is soft and cozy, which makes the scarf comfortable to wear.

Skill Level

Only basic stitches are used in this shawl but some concentration is required until the row increases and decreases are established. Stitches included are dc and popcorns.

Materials

• Caron Cakes/aran weight/ 383 yards (350 meters)/ 80% Acrylic 20% Wool/200gr)
• Colour – Strawberry Kiwi
• 5.00mm (H) crochet hook

You can use 350 – 400 of any aran weight or worsted yarn

Measurements

Shawl measures 86 in [193cm] along the long length, and 34 in [86cm] along the shorter length, without tassels, and 10 in [25cm] in width. See below schematic.

Special Stitches

• Popcorn (PC): Work 5 dc sts in space indicated in pattern, remove hook from the last loop and insert into the top of the first st. Now insert hook back into the last loop and pull this loop through. Pull tight.
• Double crochet 2 together (dc2tog) decrease: In indicated sts, work (yo, insert hook in st, yo and pull up loop, yo and pull through 2 loops on hook) twice, yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook.
• Double crochet 3 together (dc3tog) decrease: In indicated sts, work (yo, insert hook in st, yo and pull up loop, yo and pull through 2 loops on hook) 3 times, yo and pull through all 4 loops on hook.

Notes (read carefully)

• Scarf starts at one point and increases on one side only. You will then work a straight section, and finally decrease on one side only to the other point of scarf
• On straight sides, ch 2 counts as first dc.
• On increase side, ch 3 counts as first dc and the next dc is made in base of beg ch-3 (increase made).
• On decrease rows (on decrease side only) ch 2 does not count as a st and you will not work into it on next row.
• You can use any aran/worsted weight yarn to achieve a similar effect
• Includes written instructions. Pattern written in US crochet terms
• Gauge is not important. To achieve a light drape tension, I suggest make a swatch of the first 8 rows and see what hook size works best for you
• I have included some tips in the pattern to help stitch placement.
• Stitch counts (in Itallics) are included at the end of some rows to help you

Caron Cake Crochet Scarf Pattern Instructions

Increase side

Row 1: Using 5mm hook, ch 4, 2 dc in 4^th ch from hook, turn – 3 dc

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout on increase rows), 1 dc in same st (at base of ch 3) (increase made), dc in next 2 sts (making last dc in top of beg ch 4), turn – 4 dc

Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout on straight edge rows), dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in last st (top of beg ch 3), turn – 5 dc

Row 4: Ch 3, 1 dc in same st, dc in next 4 sts, turn – 6 dc

Row 5: Ch 2, dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in last st, turn – 7 dc

You will now start popcorn rows

Row 6: Ch 3, 1 dc in same st, ch 1, skip 1 st, PC (see special stitches) in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in last st, turn – 4 dc, 1 PC

Row 7: Ch 2, dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next st, dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in PC, dc in next ch-1 st, dc in next st, 2 dc in last st, turn – 9 dc

Row 8: Ch 3, 1 dc in same st, ch 1, skip 1 st, PC in next st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st; rep from * across, ending with dc in last st, turn.

Row 9: Ch 2, * dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next st; rep from * across until 4 sts remain, dc in PC, dc in next ch-1 st, dc in next st, 2 dc in last st, turn.

Rows 10 – 33: Repeat rows 8 & 9

Row 34: Repeat row 8 – 18 dc, 1 PC

Straight Part of scarf

You will now continue to work your scarf straight, without any increases. In this section, ch 2 at the beginning of the row counts as 1 dc.

Row 35: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), * dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next st; rep from * across until 4 sts remain, dc in PC, dc in next ch-1 st, dc in 2 last sts, turn – 36 dc (no increase)

Row 36: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, PC in next st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st; rep from * across, ending with dc in last st, turn – 18 dc, 1 PC

Rows 37 – 90: Repeat rows 35 & 36.

You will always have a total of 18 dc, 1 PC in each even row, and a total of 36 dc on each odd row for the straight section

Decrease Side

You will now begin to decrease on one side only

Note – From now on, at the end of all odd number rows, dc2tog counts as 1 st (decrease made)

Row 91: Ch 2 (counts as a st), dc in next ch-1 sp, * dc in next st, dc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * across until 4 sts remain, dc in PC, dc in next ch-1 st, dc2tog over last 2 last sts (counts as 1 dc), turn – 35 dc

Note – From now on, at the beginning of all even number rows, ch 2 and the next dc count as 1 dc (decrease made)

Row 92: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc in next st (counts as 1 dc), ), dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, PC in next st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st; rep from * across, ending with dc in last st, turn – 17 dc, 1 PC

Row 118: Ch 2, dc in next st, dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, PC in next st, [ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st] twice, turn – 4 dc 1 PC

Row 119: Ch 2, dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next st, dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in PC, dc in next ch-1 sp, dc2tog over last 2 sts, turn – 7 dc

Row 120: Ch 2, dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts, turn – 6 dc

Row 121: Ch 2, dc in next 3 sts, dc2tog over last 2 sts, turn – 5 dc

Row 122: Ch 2, dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts, turn – 4 dc

Row 123: Ch 2, dc3tog over last 3 sts, fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all loose ends. If you wish, you can soak your scarf in lukewarm water and gently wring in a towel. Lay project out to finished size and pull gently into shape. Pin in place and leave to dry. Add tassels if you wish.

Tassel Instructions

Make 2 tassels as follows:

Using a book approx. 6 – 8” in width, cut a 12” length of yarn and lay across top of book – this will be used to tie top of tassel. Wrap yarn around book about 30 times (depending on thickness required). Using the 12” tie, knot top of tassel tightly. Cut tassel at opposite end. Wrap another length of yarn around tassel 1” from top approx. 8 times and knot ends together. Trim if needed and sew securely to 2 ends of scarf.
