The Crochet Square
The crochet square is not difficult to make. I made mine in a few evenings and really enjoyed watching them pile up!
The center motif in each square really stands out, particularly when you play around with bold, vibrant yarn shades.
These squares are quick to make and provide a sturdy foundation for your bag.
Crochet Bag Construction Details
This Boho bag is like a fun puzzle of 50 mini crochet squares, and it looks great on both sides. You can show off the front of the bag or the back piece, depending on your mood or outfit.
You’ll be piecing together these cheerful squares, and adding a single crochet border for a polished finish.
I’ve used a contrasting color for joining the squares – it gives an extra decorative touch that really pops!
The shoulder strap is crocheted, but feel free to upcycle a leather strap from an old bag.
The bag doesn’t necessarily need a lining but you can definitely add one. It’s an excellent way to give your own bag a bit more structure and protect your items inside.

Yarn for the Crochet Tote Bag
When it comes to crocheting bags I’d recommend cotton yarn as your go-to choice. Cotton yarn offers more structure ensuring the body of the bag holds its shape, even after many uses.
The pattern uses a dk weight (light worsted) cotton but you can also use an aran weight (worsted weight) yarn and a crochet hook size to match your yarn weight. Your finished tote bag will be a bigger size.
Acrylic yarn can be a good alternative. While it may stretch a bit more, it’s available in a wide array of colors and is easy to care for.

Looking for pattern ideas? Consider my African granny square pattern – it would look fantastic on a bag. Or maybe give the sunflower granny square a try for a floral touch!

Joining the Squares

Front Panel: Lay out squares in 5 rows and 5 columns. Holding RS together, * sl st through BLO of both motifs at the same time, using each st and ch-1 sp across each 5-motif row. Fasten off after each row, rep from * along each 5-motif column.
Rep for Back panel. Block each panel to size.
Finishing the Panels
Join MC in any corner of Front panel, sc around piece, working 2 sc in each corner ch-1 sp. Fasten off and rep for Back panel.
Joining the Panels Row: Using 3.5mm hook and holding RS of panels together, and working through both thicknesses throughout, join in top left corner, * sc across to next corner, 2 sc in corner; rep from * once, sc across to next corner (top right). Do not fasten off. Turn bag RS out.
Top Band of the Bag
You will now crochet the band around the top of the bag in rounds using MC.
Tip – use a smaller hook to tighten the tension
Round 1: Using 3.00mm hook, ch 1, sc evenly across top of front panel, continue across top of back panel, sl st to beg sc to join.
Rounds 2-8: Rep Round 1. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Handles (make 2)

Row 1 (RS): Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn (100 sc)
Rows 2-5: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Sew both handles to inside of bag using photo as a guide. Add a lining if desired.
