This stunning crochet scarf uses gradient yarn cakes in two alternating colors for a modern, vibrant take on the classic granny ripple stitch. The self-striping sock yarn makes the color changes for you, effortlessly creating a playful, almost impressionistic effect.
This free crochet scarf pattern is such a satisfying project. Relax and watch the colors shift as you work the easy one-row repeat.

Using Two Gradient Sock Yarn Cakes Together
For this scarf, you will change color every 2 rows of granny ripple stitch, alternating between two different yarn cakes. This will create the bright, bold color gradients as you crochet your scarf. Every row is a different experience as the joyful and interesting color changes happen. This project will hold your interest all the way – never boring!
No need to cut your yarn between balls, just carry your yarn loosely along the side of the scarf as you crochet. And the crochet scarf is reversible too.

Details of the Granny Ripple Scarf Pattern
This scarf crochet pattern uses the granny ripple stitch (view my tutorial here). With a bit of practice, this is an easy stitch pattern that’s calming to work. At the same time, the color changes in the yarn keep the project interesting from one row to the next. Each scarf becomes unique as the self-striping yarn reveals its dramatic color changes.
I chose to make my scarf 18 inches x 88 inches, a generous size that offers versatile wearing options. But you could choose to use just 2 balls (one of each color) and make a smaller scarf.

Yarn Suggestions for the Granny Ripple Scarf
I used the following amount of yarn and hook for my scarf:
- 1600 -1800m of any light fingering weight/sock yarn
- 4 mm hook
I chose two different colorways of Zauberball Crazy by Schoppel-Wolle. This wool/nylon blend yarn has so many color choices – each one a self-striping playground of infinite color possibilities!
You can use any equivalent fingering weight yarn you have in your stash. However, to get a similar color shift effect, you will need to use a self-striping yarn. Solid yarns will give the scarf a different personality, similar to the Granny Ripple Blanket.

Other Yarn Options for the Granny Ripple Stitch Scarf
The sample granny ripple stitch crochet scarf uses two yarn cakes each in two different colors. But this would also be a fun pattern to try with random balls of self-striping or variegated yarn that you love the colors but don’t like the way they work up. Alternating cakes like this arranges the colors differently with surprisingly pleasing results.
For a slightly more harmonious look, this method also works well alternating two balls of the same colorway, but starting each ball at a different point in the color repeat. Have fun experimenting with different colors and see how your scarf turns out!
