This free beginner-friendly scarf pattern is easy to crochet, featuring a simple stitch repeat that’s quick to learn. The result is a soft, squishy scarf that’s both cozy and stylish—perfect for keeping warm on chilly days or adding a handmade touch to your outfits.
This crochet scarf features a reversible stitch pattern that creates a beautifully textured fabric. The stitch is simple: work 1 single crochet, 1 half-double crochet, and 1 double crochet in the same stitch, then skip a few stitches and repeat.
The texture it creates is soft and squishy, ideal for a winter accessory you’ll love to wear or gift.

Choosing the Right Yarn for your Crochet Scarf
This crochet scarf is made with a soft worsted-weight yarn, but you can easily adapt it to suit any weight of yarn you have on hand. You can adjust the size of the scarf by using the multiple 3 sts + 2 extra for the foundation chain, to make the scarf wider or narrower.
I used approximately 700m of worsted-weight yarn in variegated gorgeous shades of pink, which resulted in a cozy, generous-sized scarf.
I used a 6 mm hook for my scarf, which gave it a lovely loose drape. Since the stitch pattern creates a tight, closed fabric, I wanted to avoid making the scarf too stiff. A scarf should feel soft and comfortable, not stiff like a board!
To find the right hook size for your tension, experiment by working a few rows. Adjust as needed until the fabric feels just right—cozy, drapey, and perfect for wrapping up in.

Easy & Beginner-Friendly Scarf Pattern
The easy, repetitive crochet stitch pattern makes this scarf a relaxing project you can work on while watching TV or chatting with friends. The pattern is a 1-row repeat and is the same on both sides.
I added a fringe to the ends of my scarf to finish it off, but you may prefer to add tassels or leave it as it is.
