Sharing is caring!

I have a free crochet stitch pattern for you today. I called this a Double Grit stitch. It uses single crochet and double crochet stitches in the same row, and you work in the opposite stitch in the following row.

Don’t worry, it is so easy! You will crochet only two repeat rows using basic crochet stitches. It is a very relaxing stitch to work.

Color Options

The grit stitch creates a close fabric with a lot of visual interest and loads of potential for colour play.

I love the way the colours mesh into each other. It is best to use 2 or more colours, so that the stitch design is more apparent. It looks a bit like Morse Code!

Both sides of the crochet fabric have a different design on each side which is also fun.

What to Crochet with the Grit Stitch

This stitch is perfect for making pillows and blankets. You have a beautiful texture and endless possibilities for color play.

If you make a crochet blanket I suggest you use a larger hook than required for your yarn, to give a looser drape for your blanket.

I made a sample in 2 colours and one in multiple colours. Have fun trying out your own combinations!

Materials

You can use any yarn you wish to try out the stitch. For my samples I used a DK weight yarn and a 5mm crochet hook.

You will also need a yarn needle for weaving in the threads

Instructions for Grit Stitch

Make a foundation chain using a multiple of 4 + 2 (+ 1)

For the sample I chained 23

Row 1: 1 sc into 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, * dc in next 2 ch, sc in next 2 ch; rep from * across until 2 chs remain, sc in last 2 ch, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout), dc in next st, * sc in next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts; rep from * across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in 1st st, sc in next st, * dc in next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * across, making last st in top of beg ch 3, turn.

Repeat rows 2 & 3 for the pattern, that’s it!

I love that when you use only 2 colours, you will end up with a different design on each side!
