Double Grit Stitch Crochet Tutorial – Free Pattern

March 21, 2019

Sharing is caring!

A free crochet stitch tutorial for you today. Perfect for making pillows and blankets. I called this a Double Grit stitch. It uses single crochets and double crochets in the same row, and you work in the opposite stitch in the following row.  Don’t worry, it is so easy! The stitch creates a close fabric with a lot of visual interest and loads of potential for colour play. I love the way the colours mesh into each other. It is a very relaxing stitch to work. It is best to use 2 or more colours, so that the stitch design is more apparent. It looks a bit like Morse Code!

This crochet stitch would be amazing for blankets! I would use a larger hook than required for your yarn, to give a good drape. I love a good drape, don’t you?!

I made a sample in 2 colours and one in multiple colours. Have fun trying out your own combinations. I am making a blanket using this stitch and will share with you soon!

You can use any yarn you like. I used Deramore’s Studio dk 100% Acrylic; 100g/250m which I love, and a 5mm crochet hook.

You will also need a yarn needle for weaving in the threads

US Crochet terms

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

ch – chain

sl st – slip stitch

st – stitch

rep – repeat

UK Crochet terms

dc – double crochet

tr – treble crochet

ch – chain

sl st – slip stitch

st – stitch

rep – repeat

Instructions (in US crochet terms)

Make a chain with a multiple of 4 + 2 (+ 1) for foundation chain. For the sample I chained 23

Row 1: 1 sc into 2nd ch from hook,  sc in next ch, *  dc in next 2 ch,  sc in next 2 ch; rep from * across until 2 chs remain,  sc in last 2 ch, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout),  dc in next st, *  sc in next 2 sts,  dc in next 2 sts; rep from * across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1 (does not count as a st),  sc in 1st st, sc in next st, *  dc in next 2 sts,  sc in next 2 sts; rep from * across, making last st in top of beg ch 3, turn.

Repeat rows 2 & 3 for the pattern, that’s it!

I love that when you use only 2 colours, you will end up with a different design on each side!
