How to Crochet Your C2C Blanket
This was my first time crocheting a C2C blanket! I can’t believe I waited this long to try one and I loved the process. I think I always thought it was difficult but once I started, and practiced a swatch it was so easy.
If you can chain and double crochet, you can make this blanket. The C2C technique is beginner-friendly, though it might look tricky at first. I suggest starting with a small practice swatch as I did, to get comfortable with the diagonal box stitch (ch 3, 3 dc).
Here’s how to crochet a C2C rectangle blanket:
- Start from one corner and increase until the blanket reaches your desired width.
- After working your straight rows, begin decreasing by one block per row until only two blocks remain.
- Finish with a final row, decreasing at both ends, to complete your rectangle.
Tip: When increasing, work a block into the ch-3 space of the last block from the previous row. When decreasing, slip stitch into the final ch-3 space without adding a block—this keeps the edges neat.

Yarn and Materials
For this project, I used Hobbii Toucan Fine in 8 vibrant colors and a 5.5 mm hook. It’s a soft worsted weight chenille yarn, perfect for creating a squishy texture.
- You’ll need about 1200 meters of aran or worsted weight yarn in total. Feel free to experiment with colors and textures to make it your own. The yarn you choose will influence the overall feel of the blanket, so pick something you enjoy working with!
I went with bright, cheerful colors to give the blanket a vibrant feel. The mix of contrasting shades really makes each row pop and kept me wanting to crochet – just one more row!

Finishing Touches
This blanket looks great as is, but you can add a border if you prefer a more finished look. Try adding 2-3 rows of single crochet around the edges for a neat frame. You can even add a new color for an extra pop!
Whether you leave it border-free or add an edging, this C2C blanket is sure to become a cherished keepsake. You can find the free pattern below.

Notes
- The pattern is written in US crochet terms
- Choose any weight of yarn that you prefer, and for the hook size, select one that is at least one size larger than what’s recommended
- You will crochet from one corner to the other using the diagonal box stitch (ch 3, 3 dc)
- Increase for 38 rows or until the blanket reaches the desired width. You will crochet straight for 10 rows.
- Then start decreasing by one block each row until only two blocks remain. You will work one final row decreasing at both ends, to finish the rectangle blanket.
TIP – Increasing at the end of the row means working a block into the ch-3 of the last block of the previous row. Decreasing at the end of the row means slip stitching into the final ch-3 but not working a block in it
Color Notes
- You will change yarn color every 2 rows in the final yarn over of every 2nd row.
- When changing color on a decrease row, slip stitch across with old color and join in new color when starting the row. This gives a neater finish.
C2C Baby Blanket Instructions
Increase Section
In the Increase Rows section, each row adds one additional block, gradually expanding both the width and length of your work. By the end of this section, you’ll have formed a large triangle. The length of one of the triangle’s perpendicular edges will represent the width of your blanket
Using first color, ch 6.
Row 1: 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in each of the next 2 chs, turn – 1 block.
Row 2: Ch 6, 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in each of the next 2 chs, (sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp of first block, turn – 2 blocks.

Row 3: Ch 6, 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in each of the next 2 chs, *(sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp of next block; rep from * to end, turn – 3 blocks
Rows 4: Ch 6, 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in each of the next 2 chs, *(sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp of next block; rep from * to end, turn – 4 blocks

Rows 5 – 38: Rep Row 4 – 38 blocks.
Even Section
In the crochet rectangle even section, one end of each row increases while the other end decreases. This extends the length of the blanket without changing the number of blocks per row. Throughout this section, the block count remains the same, and by the end, you’ll have a rectangle with a large missing triangle in the upper corner.
Note: Odd numbered rows begin with an increase and end with a decrease. The opposite is true for even numbered rows.
Row 1: Ch 6, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 2 chs, *(sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp of next block; rep from * to last ch-3 sp, sl st in last ch-3 sp, turn, sl st in next 3 dc – 38 blocks.
Row 2: *(sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp of next block; rep from * to end, turn – 38 blocks.
Rows 3-10: Rep Rows 1 & 2 – 38 blocks

Decrease Section
In the crochet decrease section, each row reduces by one block until you have just two blocks remaining. After that, you’ll work the final row to complete your rectangular C2C blanket.
Note: Decreasing at both the beginning and end of the row only decreases the block count by 1.
Row 1: Sl st in first 3 dc, *(sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp of next block; rep from * to last ch-3 sp, sl st in ch-3 sp of last block, turn – 37 blocks (1 block decreased)
Rep Row 1 until 2 blocks remain.
Final Row: (Sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp of next block, sl sl in next block – 1 block

Finishing
Weave in all ends. If you need to block your blanket, check your yarn content for instructions.
I choose to not add a border edging to my blanket, but you could add a border by working a few single crochet rows around the edge if you wish. If you need to block your blanket, check your yarn content for instructions.
