I have a beautiful Stitch Tutorial for you today – How to Crochet the Granny Spike Stitch. The pattern includes a Video further down the page and links to two blanket patterns that you can make using this lovely stitch!
I was swatching for a baby blanket to make as a gift and wanted a stitch that was striking – in a few colours – and easy and quick to make, and I just love this result! The Granny Spike Stitch creates a substantial fabric with a lot of visual interest and loads of potential for colour play. It is a very relaxing stitch to work. You can change colours every row, or every two rows as I did. which gives the illusion of a wavy pattern. I like to make my ‘spike stitch’ very loosely, try out to see what works best for you.
This crochet stitch would be amazing for blankets!

Materials
I used a DK weight yarn and a 4.5mm crochet hook. You can use any yarn you like and matching hook. I like to go up a hook size for this pattern, as the loose tension creates more texture in the ‘spike stitch’ and a looser drape.

April 16, 2019 at 12:39 pmThank you! I am sorry but I don’t have a video tutorial. I would love to make them but my broadband is too slow at present to upload videos…hopefully in the future it will improve. Have a look on YouTube and you will find a few videos for Granny Spike Stitch!

January 16, 2021 at 3:23 pmHey there. What is the best way to weave ends on this one? I usually like to weave as I go but I don’t know if that would be best for this blanket.

January 16, 2021 at 8:09 pmHi! I usually weave in the ends after a few rows are worked. You can leave them for when you are finished but you might regret it!

April 30, 2019 at 4:52 pmWould love to make a lapghan or afghan using this wonderful stitch! Would you be able to tell me how many stitches it would take to create them? I am not that experienced with crochet. Thank you.

May 1, 2019 at 3:28 pmI would love to help if I can. If you email me – [email protected] and let me know what width you would like your blanket to be, and what weight yarn you will use. What you can do is, chain roughly enough chains for the width you need (and extra) and as you work the first row, stop when it is wide enough!

May 1, 2019 at 4:17 pmThank you for your swift reply! After I sent my inquiry I found the Poppy’s Blanket which is the same stitch. The 4ch+1 pattern stitch will be helpful to obtain the size I need.

May 13, 2019 at 12:52 amWhat is the ending row for the Granny Spike stitch pattern. If you leave as is it will have spaces.

May 18, 2019 at 4:32 pmMy apologies for delay! I was unable to see comments for a while. Yes, it will have spaces. But If you do another row with a sc on the higher stitches and chains in between, you should be able to straighten the row. I will try out a few ideas myself and get back to you!

January 19, 2020 at 12:57 amLove this pattern, do you have any tips for changing color at the end of a row please? Thanks
[email protected]
January 20, 2020 at 9:59 amHi Heather! Sorry for delay. When I come to the end of a row, I drop my yarn before the very last yarn over of the final stitch, and use my next colour for that yarn over. You can then start the next row. It is a neat way of changing colour!

January 2, 2021 at 4:23 amCan you tell me the yarn and colors for the bright sample with oranges, reds, greens and blues in it? The darker blue would go with what I have in mind

January 2, 2021 at 11:34 pmHi Jen. I used Scheepjes Riverwashed yarn for the sample. Hope that helps!
