I have another free stitch tutorial for you today! It is an easy crochet ripple stitch pattern, using double crochet stitch and chains to create a gentle crochet ripple. The stitch works up quickly and is easy to remember, with loads of potential for colour play. It is a very relaxing stitch to work.
This crochet stitch would be amazing for blankets and scarves….see picture further down the page for a scarf I crocheted using this stitch. The pattern includes a picture tutorial.
I made a sample in 4 colours. Have fun trying out your own combinations!

Materials
You can use any yarn you have in your stash and a matching hook. I used a DK weight yarn, and a 4.5mm crochet hook.
You will also need a yarn needle for weaving in the threads

- dc – double crochet
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- st – stitch
- rep – repeat
- t-ch – turning chain
- sp – space
UK Crochet terms
- tr – treble crochet
- ch – chain

Crochet Ripple Stitch Instructions (in US crochet terms)
Make a chain with a multiple of 10 sts, plus 3 for the foundation chain. For the sample I chained 33.
Row 1: Work 1 dc into the 4th ch from hook (counts as 2dc), 1 dc in each of the next 3 ch, skip 2 ch, 1 dc in each of the next 4 ch, ch 2, * 1 dc in each of the next 4 ch, skip 2 ch, 1 dc in each of the next 4 ch, ch 2; rep from * across to the last 6 ch, skip 2 ch, 1 dc in each of the next 3 ch, 2 dc in the last ch.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1dc), 1 dc in same st, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, * skip 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, [1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc] in the next ch-2 sp, 1 dc in each of the 3 sts; rep from * across to last 6 sts, skip 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 dc in the last st (t-ch).
Repeat row 2 for the pattern, changing colours as you wish.
Crochet Ripple Ideas
Here is my sample using a combination of 4 colours….it would make a gorgeous blanket or scarf! Just make sure to chain a multiple of 10 sts + 3 for the width of your project, and relax and crochet, changing colours as you wish. Perfect for a scrap yarn throw!
Crochet Ripple Stitch Scarf
I used this easy stitch to make a simple but striking crochet ripple scarf. Here are the basic instructions if you would like to crochet your own ripple scarf. This scarf was made using a DK weight yarn and a 4.5 mm crochet hook.
Basic Instructions: I chained 283 and crocheted following the easy ripple stitch, until the scarf was approx. 10in [25cm] wide. The length was approx. 72in [183cm]
So easy!
