Crocheting a traditional granny stitch shawl is a fun, easy project. I love a Crochet Stripe shawl and I wanted the design for Winter Flame Shawl to be a statement piece.
I used a vibrant and colourful self striping yarn and a single colour to create the stripes, and I love the fabulous result!

You could choose to make this pattern in a single colour, or use a self striping yarn like I did to do all the colour work for you. This is such an easy relaxing project to make – if you can make a granny square, you can make this beginner friendly shawl!
Details of the Granny Shawl
This is a large cosy shawl that uses clashing rows of colour to create a stunning accessory to wear all year round.
Using rhythmic stripes to modernize the granny crochet stitch, the resulting piece is light, super warm and can be worn around the shoulders as a shawl or around the neck as a triangle scarf. Add tassels for a finishing touch!
The beautiful yarn is Chroma Worsted that was gifted to me from WeCrochet. The colour I choose was Sedona, a bright vibrant self patterning yarn and I paired it with black for a bold contrast.
The Crochet Granny Stripe Shawl used 3 balls of the main colour – Sedona, and 2 balls of black.

Yarn for a Granny Stitch Shawl
The beauty of this pattern is that you can use any yarn you like! The rows are repeated until you reach the size you want. Use a fingering weight yarn to make a light and delicate granny triangle shawl. Or you can use a worsted weight yarn to create a cosier version!

Materials
Knitpicks Chroma Worsted – Worsted Weight, 70% Superwash Wool/30% Nylon, 100g/198yds/181m
Main Colour (MC) – 3 balls in Sedona [28053]
Contrast Colour (CC) – 2 balls in Black [25885]
5.5mm Crochet Hook
Notes
- Shawl is a triangle creating a wide wingspan
- The main body is worked in one piece from top down, increasing on each side and in the middle to form a wide triangle
- You can make this shawl in a single colour or use any colours you choose. You will need approx. 900m of Worsted Weight yarn
- To change colours between rows, complete the final yarn over of the last tr of the row with the new colour

Instructions for Crochet Granny Stripe Shawl
Using MC chain 5, sl st into 1st ch to make a circle.
Row 1: Ch 5 (counts as 1 tr, ch 1 here and throughout), work 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1, 1 tr in circle, turn – 2 tr, 6 dc
Row 2: Ch 5, 3 dc in first ch-1 sp, ch 1, [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in centre ch-3 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in last ch-1 sp, ch 1, 1 tr in 4th ch of beg ch 5, turn – 2 tr, 12 dc
Row 3: Ch 5, [3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] twice, [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1] in centre ch-3 sp, [3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] twice, 1 tr in 4th ch of beg ch 5, turn – 2 tr, 18 dc
Row 4: Ch 5, [3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] in each ch-1 sp across to centre ch-3 sp, [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1] in centre ch-3 sp, [3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] in each ch-1 sp across, 1 tr in 4th ch of beg ch 5, turn.
Rows 5 – 19: Repeat row 4. Change to CC
Row 20: Using CC repeat row 4. Change to MC
Row 21: Using MC repeat row 4. Change to CC
Rows 22 – 42: Repeat rows 20 & 21 changing colours every row.
Row 43: Using MC repeat row 20.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Finishing
Lay project out to finished size and pull gently into shape. Pin in place and spray lightly with water and leave to dry.
Tassels
Make 3 tassels as follows:
Using a book approx. 7 – 8in [18 – 20cm] in width, cut a 12” length of yarn and lay across top of book – this will be used to tie top of tassel. Wrap yarn around book about 30 times (depending on thickness required). Using the 12” tie, knot top of tassel tightly. Cut tassel at opposite end. Wrap another length of yarn around tassel 1” from top approx.8 times and knot ends together. Trim if needed and sew securely to 3 corners of shawl.
