How to Crochet a Sunflower Granny Square

This popular pattern is often called a sunburst granny square. You will crochet a circle motif in rounds using double crochet and cluster stitches.

If you are looking for an easier motif with more basic crochet stitches, my crochet granny hexagon may be right for you!

You can use puff stitches for the petals as in the classic sunburst granny, but I choose the popcorn stitch for some extra texture. You can find a video tutorial for the Sunflower square and how to make popcorn stitches below. I love using popcorn stitches – see my flower granny square for more inspiration!

When making crochet squares, my best tip is to always count your stitches as you go!

Should I block my Granny Squares?

I recommend you block your crochet squares when finished. It will make joining them together so much easier if you decide to make a crochet project.

You can use a blocking board like in the picture below but you certainly don’t need one! You can use the top of an ironing board or a blocking mat.

Pin each motif to an even shape and spray with water (or hover a steam iron over each piece) and leave to dry. It will make attaching them later much easier.

Recommended Yarn and Colors

You can use Sunflower colors in orange, yellow and brown yarn. But this square will also look beautiful in any color palette, or even in a solid color.

Acrylic yarn works great for blankets and is easy to wash and dry. You could also use cottton yarn which is perfect for pillows and a sunflower bag.

For my squares I used small amounts of DK weight yarn and Size G/4.5mm crochet hook.

You can use any yarn weight and matching hook you wish. Try a Worsted weight yarn and Size I/5.5mm crochet hook.

If you are making a sunflower square blanket try to use yarns of similar tension and qualities. Have a look and see what you have in your stash.

How to use your Sunflower Crochet Square

You could easily stop making your square after round 3, like I did in my free crochet sunflower pattern.

By squaring off your sunflower, you will create a very versatile crochet square that you can use in so many ways.

  • Use the centre crochet sunflowers as an applique to attach to a headband or hat
  • Make a Granny Square Scarf!
  • Use cotton yarn to make a pretty coaster for the table
  • 16 squares would make a beautiful pillow in fall colors
  • Make my fun granny square bag
  • Make beautiful blankets using this square in many colors! Or you could choose traditional sunflower colors for a gorgous afghan

Tips for Joining Granny Squares

There are many creative ways of joining crochet squares but I always prefer to keep it simple! If you like to sew, a whip stitch join is a fast and easy technique to make crochet seams.

For blankets, a crochet slip stitch join or a single crochet join are also popular methods and can add a nice detail to your crochet blanket.

You can find some sample joining instructions in this post for my Carousel Baby Blanket or you may like to check out my Granny Square Pillow on how to turn your squares into a cushion.
