Crochet Mandalas are very popular! This easy Free Crochet Pattern is my version of this lovely art form, which can be used as a table doily/mat, or turned into a stunning Dream Catcher or Wall Art.

Instructions are given to make the crochet mandala, and a simple easy way of attaching it to a hoop. You can then hang it on your wall or porch, or even hang outside for a beautiful decoration or for yarn bombing!

I originally designed this mandala for my book Crochet Yourself Calm

Inspired by crochet vintage doilies, I wanted an easy repetitive pattern that will slow your mind and help you relax, as you crochet stitch by stitch, and I am happy to share this easy colourful crochet tutorial with you all! I love the pleasing geometry of the ever increasing circle as you crochet this piece.

Mandala is the ancient Sanskrit word for circle, and as a practice can be found right across the world throughout many cultures and religions. Wikipedia/Mandala

How to Display a Crochet Mandala

As I looked at the crochet mandala’s on my table, I realised that I now wanted them displayed in all their colourful glory.

The crochet mandala is approx. 11in (28cm) across, and I found in my stash some embroidery hoops that were 12in (30cm) in diameter. With a little stretch, the mandala’s fitted perfectly.

I love upcycling objects I already have at home – like this straw bag I embellished with a crochet circle!

You could crochet around a hoop to attach the circle but I wanted the easiest way, and simply used a sewing needle and yarn. I think they look very lovely hanging from the trees in my rather wild Irish garden!

Yarn for your Crochet Mandala

Cotton yarn is best for this project but you can use any yarn that you have in your stash in different color combinations.

If you wish to make a mandala similar to the size below, I suggest you use a 4 ply/fingering weight yarn.

Abbreviations (US terms)

  • Sl st – slip stitch
  • Ch(s) – chain(s)
  • Sc – single crochet
  • Dc – double crochet
  • Beg – beginning
  • Sp – space
  • St(sts) – stitch(es)

Special Stitches

V-stitch – V-st: (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in the same space/stitch

Picot: Ch 3, sl st into first ch.

Materials

  • Small amounts of 4 ply cotton. I used a lovely 100% Cotton 4 ply yarn Scheepjes Cotton 8
  • 3.0mm Crochet Hook
  • Yarn Needle to weave in threads and attach to hoop
  • Scissors
  • 12in/30cm Embroidery Hoop

Size

Circle is approx. 11in [28cm] in diameter when using the suggested yarn weight and hook. You could use a heavier weight yarn and matching hook to make larger circles. You will need to use a larger hoop.

Finishing

Weave in all threads. Block your mandala by pinning into shape, and gently steam iron. If you wish to turn your mandala into a Dream Catcher, or Wall Art – here are very basic instructions on how I made my one. The crochet piece will stretch very well if your hoop is larger than the one I used

Thread a large yarn needle with some cotton yarn and attach the yarn to the top of one of the 12 petals with a stitch. Loop the yarn over the hoop and then attach to the next petal. I worked my way around the mandala, attaching each petal with a stitch and then making a loop around hoop each time. It worked out great!

  1. Hi, is something missing in the V stitch round 4. You mention “ch 4, 1 dc in same sp (counts as first V-st),” but then don’t mention DC again for the rest of the round. Sorry if I’m being dense, I’m not a very experienced crocheted.
    Thanks for your help.

    1. Hi! You will see instructions for V st (see special stitches above instructions) which is (1dc, ch1, 1dc)…Hope that helps!

  2. Thank you for your mandala pattern. I am so tired of crocheting blankets for everyone so this mandala is for me…

    1. Hi Trish! I just saw your comments now about increasing the size of the mandala. The final 2 rows are edging rows so it might be a challenge to make the design work as it is written. If you want to make a bigger mandala, there are lots of other free patterns out there that might work better. “Row 10 calls for stitches in 2 ch 1 spaces, I only have the one chain in the V stich…? ” In row 10, you will only work in the ch-1 sp of the v-sts, not the ch 2 in between.

  3. Today I feel happy When I see this. It’s a great idea for crocheters who love to crochet. this is so beautiful. really it’s so creative and it’s so useful for everyone. Thanks for the helpful ideas. I hope everyone will love this.

    1. Hi Annie,
I finished my first Mandala today, but I guess the Peaches ‘n Cream cotton yarn was too fluffy and I was only able to add 10 rows and it is still too big for my 12” embroidery hoop. Is Sheepjees cotton yarn lighter weight than the Peaches ‘n Cream? I may have to shrink my mandala or not mount it on a ring. Please advise. Thank you, Mary

      1. Hi Mary. I am not familar with Peaches ‘n Cream. The yarn I used was a thin cotton (fingering weight) so I would guess it is much finer. If you can, I would try again using a finer yarn:)

    1. You are welcome! Some people post on Instagram or Facebook and tag me. I am not aware if you can post in comments but I will check!
