The Yarn

My shawl is made from a beautiful soft DK cake yarn called Curiosity from King Cole Yarns in swirling variegated shades, which gives a wonderful stripy effect.

The colour I used is called Waterlily, with lovely colour changes throughout….that teal blue is gorgeous! I love all the luscious colours in this yarn and you can find your local stockists here

You can easily get a nice sized shawl from one ball. You could also use a Caron Cake or a Caron Skinny Cake – any shawl in a cake yarn would work great.

Asymmetric Shawl Details

The shape of this shawl is asymmetric – a boomerang shape that is perfect for wrapping around your shoulders, and makes a warm cosy scarf against winter winds.

The pattern is an easy make using basic stitches only. Once you have the first few rows worked up, it is a simple 2-row repeat pattern.

You can adjust the pattern easily by making more or fewer rows, to make the size you want.

The shawl pattern decreases gently on one side, while increasing on the other side to form an asymmetric triangle.

      1. Hi Carmen,
I finally made this pattern and I am so pleased with the final shawl! I used more yarn than I thought I would need but the lack of white yarn sent me looking for another yarn to finish the shawl! As luck would have it, I had more of the same yarn in red left over from a cowl I knitted years ago. I posted pictures on Ravelry.
Hope all is well with you and your family. We are sweltering in the Northeast even on Lake Champlain in VT. Hope you are cooler in Ireland!
        Best regards, Sandy

        1. Oh well done! I must check out your shawl! Ireland is misty and raining today but we have had some good weather too:)

  1. I am addicted to your shawls! Every time I see a shawl that I just have to make I find out it’s one of your patterns. I swear you’ve gone into my head and you create all the shawls that are in there which I haven’t had he time to make myself! You are the bestest at creating gorgeous shawls! Thank you so much for sharing!

  2. It’s a beautiful pattern and easy to follow… i was wondering, will a caron skinny cake work for this pattern? it’s a 3 weight yarn and i also 4.5 millimetre hook…

    1. Sorry for delay Candice! I think the yarn would work well and it has good meterage too. You can stop if you think the shawl is big enough!

  3. This is a lovely shawl. I haven’t made the asymmetrical shape before so I am intrigued! I recently purchased 3 cakes of Lion Brand’s Comfy Cotton Blend yarn: 50% cotton, 50% polyester and it says its a light #3 size. Would this yarn work well for this pattern? Thank you for your answer and the free pattern.

    1. Hi and thank you! The yarn will work great. You can make this shawl any size you like….just finish when the shawl is large enough:)

  4. Hi Carmen! Thank you for your reply. I started your lovely pattern and it’s really easy to work up. I’m really liking the Comfy Cotton Blend yarn, the color I chose not so much but I know it will look great when I’m done! I’m thinking I would like to make this pattern in the yarn that you made yours with. The coloring is so beautiful. But for a fall project! Thank you again for the pattern

  5. Hello Carmen,
I was looking through my stash and found a couple of skeins of Red Heart “Hulu” – a thin no 3 (dk) weight. It’s discontinued but I have more than enough yarn to make a good size shawl. My goal this year is to use yarn from my stash. I wanted to make a shawl for the summer and remembered your pattern. It’s coming out beautifully. Easy to remember pattern and I can crochet in the car – not driving of course!
Your patterns are all lovely ( I am also working on a Liath crescent shawl) and thank you for the videos!
Hope you are having a lovely summer.
    Warm regards,
    Sandy

    1. Thanks so much Sandy! I am enjoying the summer very much. The weather has warmed up this week in Ireland….at last! Happy crocheting!
