Furry faux yarn is all the rage this year, and I have enjoyed using some of the heavier weight yarns, but when Vicky from Woolly Castle shared a new yarn from her shop on Instagram of a light-weight faux yarn from Yarn and Colors, I instantly bought some!

Furry Yarn

The yarn is called Furry and comes in lots of gorgeous colours, perfect for making smaller items. I mean, how could you resist – it is called Furry!

As always, I received my yarn from Vicky very quickly (I highly recommend her online Irish yarn shop) and started playing around with ideas. I wanted simplicity for this design and I think it turned out perfect!

Just look at the crochet snowballs hanging out on my holly bush!

Tips for Working with Furry Yarn

Faux yarn may appear to be tricky at first as you can’t see your stitches, but you quickly get used to it and it is very forgiving, as the lovely soft strands fall in place to cover any errors. You can put in or take out a stitch easily, and it will not be noticed.

I am including basic instructions to make these crochet snowballs and a few hints to make them fit whatever balls you decide to cover.

What to use for the inside of your Crochet Baubles

I used both polystyrene balls and old Christmas baubles (I like to get mine in second hand shops rather than purchasing new) – use whatever you have on hand.

Your covers may seem too big for your bauble but when you attach the 2 sides together, they will fit beautifully. You could also stuff your snowball with fiberfill or cotton wool.

Materials

  • Yarn and Colors Furry Yarn: 50g/75m/sports/dk weight – I purchased mine here Woolly Castle
  • You can use any Faux/fuzzy yarn you wish. Just match your hook to the yarn weight and adjust pattern as needed.
  • 4.00mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle to sew your pieces together
  • Scissors
  • Polystyrene Balls (I used balls approx. 9in [23cm] circumference)
  • or Christmas baubles (I used baubles 7in [18cm] circumference)
  • or cotton wool/stuffing

Instructions How to Make Crochet Snowball Baubles (US Terms)

Make 2 pieces

This is more of a recipe but I hope it will help you make some snowball baubles!

Round 1: Ch 4 (counts as first ch and 1 dc), 11 dc into first ch, join with a sl st to beg ch 4 – 12 dc

You may have to feel the stitch with your hook but do your best, it will be fine

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in same st, 2 dc in next st, and 2 dc in each st around, join with a sl st to beg ch 3 – 24 dc

Round 3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in next st, * 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; rep from * around, join with a sl st to beg ch 3 – 36 dc

For covering the larger balls I added an extra row 4, but you may not need this row if covering smaller balls

Row 4: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st around, join with a sl st to beg sc – 36 sc

Finishing

Hold both pieces firmly together around your ball and begin to sew them together by whip stitching from one side to the other. Weave in any threads back into the piece. Don’t worry if it seems loose – it will be furry and cozy when complete!

Attach a hanging loop if your ball does not have one, and make more! They are so touchable and soft and hard to resist.
